A comfy maxi skirt is a must-have for pretty much any woman, but did you know that it’s super-easy to make your own? Like, really easy. Instead of buying a new one every time you need a refresh, you can simply whip out your sewing machine for a couple quick stitches. Don’t blame me if you end up with a maxi skirt in every color under the sun! Okay fine, yes, blame me.
STEP 1: Fold your fabric in half.
STEP 2: Measure the waist of the skirt, adding an extra inch to each side to account for the seam. (You’ll need to measure your own waist to determine the number of inches.)
STEP 3: Mark your measurements with pins.
STEP 4: Decide how long you want your skirt to be and then cut each side creating a gentle A-line. Pin your pieces of fabric together.
STEP 5: Sew along each side. Hem the waist of the skirt by folding over the edge twice and then sew, leaving a half-inch margin.
STEP 6: Fold the waist over and iron it to create a waistband.
STEP 7: Stitch around the waistband, leaving an opening wide enough to fit your elastic band.
STEP 8: Cut your elastic band about an inch smaller than your waist measurement, then add a safety pin to the end of the elastic and pull it through the waistband. The fabric will bunch up, but that’s okay.
STEP 9: Sew both ends of the elastic together.
STEP 10: Sew the opening closed, and also sew through the elastic to keep it in place.
STEP 11: Hem the bottom of your skirt and trim any excess thread.
