Emma’s Sour Cream Donuts

image

If you read the books, you know that Emma likes to play around with flavors at Donut Hearts as well, and I can imagine her making these even as I write this.  There’s a real depth of flavor to these, so give them a try if you happen to have a little extra sour cream lying around.

Ingredients

1 egg, beaten

1⁄2 cup sugar

1⁄4 cup buttermilk

1⁄4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups all-purpose flour

1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg

1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

Dash of salt

Directions

Heat canola oil to 375°F.

Beat egg, then add sugar, buttermilk, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly, then set aside.

In a separate bowl, sift flour, nutmeg, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together, then add to the egg mixture in thirds until it is all combined.

Roll the dough out to 1⁄4 inch thick, then cut rounds and holes.

Fry for 3 minutes, turning halfway through, then place on paper towels to drain.

Powdered sugar can be applied immediately, but wait until they cool to add icing and sprinkles.

Makes 6–8 donuts and holes
