Gingerbread Donut Nuggets

image

No matter what time of year it is, we love the taste and smell of gingerbread in my house!  There’s something about the rich flavor that always brings smiles to our faces, and I’ve found myself making these treats in the middle of July just for the taste of something that reminds me of cooler temperatures and holiday decorations.

Ingredients

1 egg, beaten

1⁄2 cup dark-brown sugar, firmly packed

1⁄2 cup molasses

2 1⁄2 teaspoons ginger

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

1⁄2 cup sour cream

3 cups flour unbleached all-purpose (approximately)

Directions

Heat enough oil to fry your donut nuggets to 375°F.

While the oil is coming to temperature, start by beating the egg and then adding the brown sugar and mixing it in thoroughly.  Next, stir in everything except the flour, and then add just enough flour to make a soft dough, but don’t overwork it.

Pull off pieces of dough the size of your thumb, round them between your palms, and then drop them into the hot oil.  Keep turning the nuggets until they’re dark brown all around.  After you remove them from the hot oil with a slotted spoon, dust the tops with granulated sugar or dip them in melted chocolate.  Either way, they make a really delightful treat!

Makes approximately 12 nuggets
