Sometimes I get lazy, even when it comes to making donuts, as well as other treats for me and my family, and I’m sure that if you’ve cooked or baked long enough for yours, there are times when you feel the same way I do. When I want my loved ones to have something special and homemade but I don’t want to spend hours making it, this is one of the recipes I turn to. The results are unbelievable, and I get more raves for this treat than I do from some of my offerings that take a great deal more time and effort to make!
Ingredients
Precooked apple pie filling, 8 oz., from the can (cherry or any other pie filling works too)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 ready-made pie crust
Canola oil, enough to cover and fry the apple pies
Directions
While the canola oil is heating, I always like to start this recipe by warming the apple pie filling on the stovetop over low heat, adding the sugar and cinnamon and mixing it well, then taking the pan off the heat to cool a little.
Next, I unroll the pie crust onto the countertop. You can make your own crust if you’d like, but remember, this is quick and simple, and there are times I seem to have an extra crust in the freezer just waiting for me to make these treats.
Flour the rim of a drinking glass and cut circles out of the defrosted but still chilled dough by pressing down and twisting. I am usually able to get four circles out of one crust, but that will all depend on the size glass you choose.
Next, I place a small amount of cooled apple pie filling in the center of each circle, then wet the edges of the dough all the way around with water. Folding the dough over in half, I pinch the edges together, sealing in the filling. The shape will look something like a curved half moon.
Next, I carefully drop the pies into 375°F oil, and give them 3 to 4 minutes on each side before turning them with skewers. The crusts will puff out a little along the edges, and they will get golden, with maybe a little brown as well. These usually take about 8 minutes altogether to cook, but the time can vary. Don’t be afraid to leave them in a little longer than you would normally fry something.
Lastly, pull the pies from the oil, dust them with powdered sugar, and they’re ready to eat.
