This is a more secure whipping than the straightforward Common Whipping but is a little slower to apply. Form a series of overhand knots on alternate sides of the rope; that is one at the front, next at the back, then at the front again and so on. When sufficient whipping has been applied, finish off with a Reef Knot (see page 20).

For further security in addition to using waxed whipping twine, give each overhand knot a second tuck (as for a Surgeon’s Knot, page 45).
