JJ. FOUR TRAILS CIRCUIT

Located near Hurricane Campground. Head south of Sugar Grove on VA 16, turn right onto VA 650, and then left onto FR 84 to Hurricane Campground. This moderately difficult 9.6-mile loop uses a portion of the Appalachian Trail (AT) and three other trails. Terrain varies from the dry ridgetop of Iron Mountain to cool waterfalls on Comers Creek. KK. ROWLAND CREEK FALLS CIRCUIT

Located west of Sugar Grove. From VA 16, turn right onto VA 601, which after 3.5 miles turns into VA 670 in Teas. Continue on VA 670 for 4.4 miles and then fork left onto VA 656. (If you pass the Butler Fish Culture Station on the right, you’ve missed this left turn. Go back 1 mile and look for the turnoff.) Stay on VA 656 for 1.7 miles, then turn left onto VA 668, which turns into dirt FR 643. Park at the first trailhead on the right-hand side. After following Jerry’s Creek Trail to Iron Mountain, hikers can return via Rowland Creek or head west and explore Skulls Gap for a total hike of 11.8 miles. LL. WHITETOP LAUREL CIRCUIT

From Damascus, take US 58 east and turn right onto VA 728 to Creek Junction parking lot. This 11.5-mile loop uses portions of the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Virginia Creeper Trail, and includes a number of crossings over the cascading Whitetop Laurel Creek. (800) 628-7202.
