*Shortly after General Eddleman retired in the spring of 1962, he became a member of the Military Advisory Board of Hughes Aircraft Company. He attended Hughes Aircraft board meetings, at $200 a day plus expenses, and later traveled around the country, visiting military installations, chatting with senior army officers—many of them old friends—sounding them out on army projects of interest to Hughes, and picking up the latest intelligence on weapons development. In time, General Eddleman would be just one of scores of retired air force, army, marine corps, and navy officers recruited by Hughes not only for their expertise in scientific and military affairs, but also for their critical connections in Washington and throughout the military establishment.
