As was the case in so many of Hughes’s business dealings, the public perception of his helicopter contract, shaped by the industrialist’s artful publicists, bore little resemblance to the truth. In an article describing the contract and the helicopter, Aviation Week reported on June 28, 1965, that “Hughes officials said the company definitely expects to make a good profit from commercial and military sales of the OH-6A but will not break down the profit potential from military and civilian sales separately.” Hughes officials knew, of course, that the contract would result in at least a $10-million loss.
