He continues to live comfortably in Delta, British Columbia. Jack Cleveland, who sold the first mining claims to Hughes and who worked closely with Meier in the mining venture, also was indicted on federal income-tax evasion charges and also fled to Canada. He died on November 9, 1973, at Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of sixty-four.
