HONEY IS NOT BEE VOMIT

Kids of all ages like to gross each other out. One story they like to tell is that honey is “bee vomit.” This is based on a misunderstanding of how bees carry nectar from flowers to the hive. Bees have a special “honey crop” where they store the nectar. It is separated from their actual stomach with a one-way valve. The valve is a pretty cool trick. It allows the bee to transfer some of the stored nectar to their stomach if they start running out of energy on the flight back home, but it prevents the contents of the stomach from reversing direction into the crop. So it's not bee vomit. Tell your kids.

DEFYING GRAVITY

A foraging bee can carry back to the hive about 40 mg of nectar, which is pretty impressive considering that she herself weighs only about 120 mg. Equally impressive is that worker bees inside the hive can carry about 100 mg of nectar on foot.
