Women do all the work. Only a few men are tolerated long enough to service the queen, but they often come to a bad end.
The workers are worked to death. When they get old, sick, or injured and no longer can do the job, they don't get to live out their days in cushy retirement, enjoying the fruits of their long labors—they get pushed out the front door, without even the opportunity to say goodbye to friends or clean out their desks. If they don't take the hint, one of the workers will pick them up and, barely clearing the ground, fly them a distance and unceremoniously drop them to the ground. If they're lucky, they'll get picked off by a bird and die quickly; otherwise, they'll succumb by the next morning, alone and not comprehending how, after all that work, their lives came to this.
The leader has sex with multiple partners; the workers aren't allowed to.
The leader can live up to ten years, but there's a good chance that she'll be overthrown from her position as hive leader long before then. If the workers, her own daughters, come to believe that she's over-the-hill, she'll be stung to death and replaced.
