CLIPPED WINGS AND PRISONER BEES

Sometimes a colony of bees will want to relocate to a better place, or split a crowded hive in two. Some beekeepers try to prevent this by clipping a wing of a queen. If she can't fly, their thinking goes, the bees will have to stay even if they are unhappy.

This is cruel on several levels. Ironically, it is also self-defeating for the beekeeper. Unhappy prisoner bees will not be producing much honey. Worse, the beekeeper loses huge educational opportunities, because if you can learn how to keep free bees content while still getting what you want in return, you've gained great lessons in beekeeping and—dare I say it?—life.
