Part II

Classical Arguments regarding the
Existence or Nonexistence of God

This part of Two Wings considers some of the most important of the many arguments about theism that have been treated in the long history of philosophical theism. Especially important in this section will be treatments of deductive arguments proving or denying the very existence of the theistic God. The first two chapters of this section treat traditional ways of explaining the meaning of the word “God”, the middle three treat three different famous, classical arguments purporting to prove God’s existence, and the last four chapters are devoted to three arguments designed to show that the God of theism does not exist. Almost all the arguments treated in this part of the book have been around for many centuries. The goal is to offer synopses of those arguments that will give readers the basic insights necessary to grasp their main points.
