Part IV

Arguments about Theism and Morality

The first part of Two Wings treated the basics of the relationship between faith and reason; the second part treated classical arguments regarding faith and reason; and the third treated contemporary arguments regarding modern natural science. In its fourth and final part, Two Wings turns to practical considerations, asking, “How, then, shall we live?” In this fourth part, the first two of the five chapters consider basic principles of ethics—namely, virtue and law. The second two consider more particular matters pertaining to practical affairs—namely, family and warfare. The final chapter takes up politics. Complete treatments of any of these themes is impossible here; the goal is rather to indicate in outline how a theist might attempt to integrate the actual living of a life of faith with the actual living of a life of reason.
