Whoa! Mom and Dad kissing was enough for me to close the journal for a while.
But I was intrigued by the spider-like man who attacked my mother. He was unlike anything I’ve known about the Monsters. The ones I came across were shadows, dark clouds, and according to Mary who was able to get close enough to analyze them while she was surrounded by them, the Monsters were manifestations of our darkest fears. They were made out of plasms, which Mary had said were former beings of humans. Ghosts.
The one who attacked Mom actually spoke to her and mentioned she and Dad cannot get together to have their future human. A child. The Monster was dead set on trying to eliminate that child by going after Mom and Dad. Of course, that child was me.
A shiver ran down my spine as the realization hit me. Mom had kept me hidden and safe in the underground shelter all of my life on New Earth, knowing the Monsters were going to be after me. For years she kept me safe. She and Dad kept me safe when Mom was pregnant with me on the Red Genesis. What did she go through to keep me safe? What an incredible burden for my parents.
No wonder Mom trained me to defend myself. But she never told me about the necklace with the cross pendant that she used to destroy the Monster. I’ve never come across her necklace in the shelter. Perhaps she had left it on Red Genesis? Perhaps she had lost it?
“Mom,” I said aloud. “What happened to you and Dad on the Red Genesis? How did the Monsters get onboard, and how did they end up on New Earth?”
It was Mom’s birthday, and normally, I would have spent it with Mom. Reading Mom’s journal was like being with Mom, except she was revealing a part of her that I had never seen before. This was a woman on the brink of discovering her inner strength, that she must protect her future child at all cost.
I opened Mom’s journal again, reading on.
