Synopsis
Book One: Negociation
Lucy Smith is the only child of Charles and Abigail Smith. After her father’s untimely passing, she is left as the owner of the third largest shipping company in the world. Lucy puts in a proposal that would make her father’s company the second largest in the world. She has one small problem; her father sold 10% of the company to Jake Logan, the most gorgeous man Lucy has ever seen, but also the most hard-headed and stubborn. Lucy needs his signature to complete what will be the company’s largest shipment to date.
Jake Logan knew the moment he laid eyes on Lucy Smith that she was the woman he had waited his whole life for. It was love at first sight. Jake has one hurdle to overcome in making Lucy his wife: Lucy herself. She has sworn off relationships and Jake is bound and determined to make her see she can have both; a successful marriage as well as a successful and thriving business.
Book Two: Storm
Lucy has to fly to Hong Kong to win the proposal and needs Jake’s help. Lucy is beside herself when she realizes Jake is blackmailing her in order to receive this help; should she accept his offer? After all, agreeing to spend every waking moment she is in Hong Kong with Jake won't be that difficult, will it? She is a grown woman and knows how to say no; she can handle this.
Lucy having to fly to Hong Kong gives Jake just the chance he needs to spend time with her, alone! He is going to make the most of it and show Lucy that they belong together forever. He has a little less than a week to show Lucy how he feels and to make her realize what her heart is telling her. Will Jake’s plan work? Or will this be the calm before the storm?
Book Three: Promise
Jake sets sail for home with the largest cargo to date. Lucy has left him high and dry in port, but it is not over. He has a plan that will ensure Lucy cannot run and hide anymore when he gets back home. But a fierce storm on the high seas threatens the crew and the ship itself. Will Jake even live to see Lucy again and put his plan into action?
Lucy comes home with a heavy heart. She has no time for Jake; she is too close to seeing her dreams and the promises she made come true. When the ship and crew go missing in a storm, is it too late for Lucy and Jake? Will she ever get the chance to tell him what the new secret she just found out and, more importantly, what is in her heart? While Jake battles a storm at sea, Lucy battles a storm of the heart! Will they both survive and come out the other end? Will Lucy be able to make a new promise and keep it?

Lucy hung up the phone with her largest import contractor. She was about to close her largest import shipment to date, a huge bonus in a male-dominated world, which assured continued respect from others in the industry.
It had not been an easy road, having to take over the business her grandfather had started, which was left to her at the unexpected death of her father, Charles Smith, at the age of 68. She had known this day would come, and her father had made sure she was as ready as she would ever be, but she had always thought he would be here to guide her as needed, calling from the golf course or the country club to check in and offer advice.
But fate offered a different hand. Charles succumbed to a massive heart attack after a weekend of golf with his buddies, leaving Lucy large and in charge with one fell swoop of the pen. So far she had succeeded. She hoped her father was looking down on her and was as proud of her as she knew he would be. He was unlike any other man; he always believed in her and never doubted her for one second.
That was probably why she had yet to marry; big shoes to fill for one man. She wanted a man just like her father, and he was one of a kind. It would be difficult to find someone who could put up with her and her hours; she was used to being in control, and she liked it that way. A nice long life as a bachelorette suited her just fine and she saw no reason to think otherwise.
She owned the third largest import/export company in the world and had billions to go along with that. What could a man offer her that she couldn’t get with a fun-filled night and a “don’t call me, I’ll call you” line at the end? After all, men do it, and this was an equal society. At thirty-seven, she was old enough to take charge of her love life, if she had one.
Despite her money, most men of stature wanted the trophy wife by their side. Someone blonde and slim, petite, pretty to look at, but quiet. This did not describe Lucy at all; she was tall, almost six foot, definitely what one would consider BBW: a big, beautiful, woman. Yes, she had “extra” curves on her curves, but she did not care; when she spoke, she commanded, and got, the attention of all in the room. If the men did not like her for her brains, she did not need them anyhow. She was a tigress, ready to pounce and to dominate, which she did quite well. And she knew she would dominate this new deal and become the second largest shipping company in the world, come hell or high water, and no one was going to stand in her way.

Jake Logan pulled the large cargo ship into the dock and begun the process of unloading the shipping containers. He loved the excitement that came with crossing the ocean with his hull and deck full, only to pull in safe and sound to the port. He loved the sea and all it had to offer, he even joked he had “land sickness”. He only felt comfortable and at home at the helm of a large ship, which was probably why he had not married yet, to the dissatisfaction of his nagging mother.
He loved her dearly, yet every call home ended in, “When am I going to get any grandchildren from you?”
He laughed her off, yet inside he was yearning to settle down and have kids. Problem was, people did not honor or respect marriage very much anymore. When he married, it would be for good. One woman to share forever with. Jake was waiting for that one special woman; she was out there, somewhere, waiting to find him. She would be extraordinary and be able to endure all his quirks and sea adventures.
He could well afford a beautiful home for his family now. He had saved his whole life and his mentor, Charles Smith, had sold him ten percent of the Smith Shipping at a much lower price than it was worth.
Chuck. How he missed him.
Chuck had been his best friend and had taught him everything he knew about the business. Chuck had made him a deck hand at the age of twenty-one and had kept him under his wing. He really was more of a father than his own father had ever been. Charles had paid for his college education and assured that he not only knew how to run a ship, but also the business end of the company.
He cleaned up well and could sit at the head of any negotiation table and hold his own; but the sea called his name, and he answered back. That didn’t leave much time for love, but Jake was patient. He knew the right woman would be worth it.

Lucy walked through the front door of her penthouse and kicked off her heals. She considered her options for dinner and realized, as usual, she had no time and also no one to cook for. Most people did not know she also had a degree in cooking, which was her private passion; but she saw no reason to go all gung-ho for just herself, plus she had too much work to do if she wanted to land this contract. This deal would set in stone her place in this jungle called a corporation. She would be known worldwide in her field as a force to be reckoned with, and being the only female member of the Grand Alliance, a vessel consortium formed to aid in scheduling all shipping rotations and schedules, she needed all the boosting she could get.
Lucy went into her office after ordering from the local Chinese restaurant and started to work on her proposal. She had one week to complete the proposal, have it approved by her legal department as well as signed off by the silent partner in the business.
She had wondered about this since being told of the business decision, although she would never question her father’s plans, seeing as he had never been wrong in business before, yet this stumped her.
She could never have envisioned any of the Smith Shipping Corp being in anyone’s hands but a Smith. But it was, and she would abide by her father’s wishes to include this person in any new contracts. One thing was for sure, she needed to secure the best captain the industry had to offer for this deal, even if it meant to hire from outside. As soon as she finished this proposal, she would make some calls and find that person and pray to God he was willing to take on this responsibility.
He would be taking command of the largest cargo ship ever built, The Abigail, which had been named after her beloved mother, who had died when she was ten. Charles Smith never married again; he had said no one could compare to her beauty or come close to stealing his heart and soul like Abigail did. Maybe this was why Lucy had not married yet, secretly she yearned for a love so pure, so whole, you knew that person would never love another. She would wait if she had to; she was content, and she would know him when she found him. He would be as tall and handsome as her father, strong and able bodied and commanding to boot.
As she looked out her window, she couldn’t help but wonder where he was out there in the world, and what he was doing at that moment.
***
Jake sat looking out his window. He was pondering the meeting in the morning with his attorney, Landon Hall. Landon had called him that very evening and informed him that a business proposal from Smith Shipping to a major importer would be on his desk by ten tonight for review and signature. Landon had briefed him somewhat on what he knew of the proposition and Jake was worried.
This deal would be the largest haul in the company’s history and he hoped Ms. Smith knew what she was doing. He would not take lightly the ruination of all that Charles and his father had built, family or not. Jake was mulling this over in his mind; he would look this proposal over with a fine-tooth comb. Charles had left him more leeway on contracts than ten percent would normally allow an investor, but Charles knew his strengths, and what he could offer this company, and he was never going to do anything that would diminish all that Charles had bestowed on him.
Better yet, he thought it best to make sure Ms. Smith was at this meeting as well. He always liked to look someone in the eyes when asking or answering questions, Jake felt the eyes were the windows to the soul. He would know exactly what kind of businesswoman he was dealing with the moment he shook her hand, and Jake hoped she was ready for him.
***
Lucy was up at the crack of dawn, going back over the proposal to make sure it was cut and dry. Mr. Hall had called back last evening and requested her presence at the meeting. She was to arrive at 10:30 this morning, giving time for him to go over the proposal with the investor.
This suited her fine, as she was spending all morning searching high and low for the best captain in the industry. This was proving to be no small venture, and she was running out of time. She would have to leave after this call, if she was going to make the meeting on time.
Oh well, it’s not like she had to have a name today. She would resume her search at the office after lunch. Right now she had a meeting to attend and a proposal she needed signed, sealed, and delivered.
***
Jake had combed over the proposal not once, not twice, but three times. He could honestly say he was very impressed with Ms. Smith’s business savvy. This proposal was as tight as they can get and provided very well in protecting all sides as well as providing a bid that was both acceptable in terms of profit for the company as well as making this deal comfortable on the pockets of the importer. Jake actually felt the company had a high probability of winning this bid, and he was going to do all he could to insure its success, and he had only one way to do that. I am going to captain the barge myself, or not sign off on the deal.

Lucy exited the parking garage of the Century Center and entered the elevator to go to the fourth floor. She checked her business suite as she exited the elevators, squaring her shoulders and preparing to do all she needed to insure a signature on this package. She entered the office and introduced herself to the secretary and took the seat that was closest to Mr. Hall’s office.
After a few minutes, she was called into the office. She entered and spoke briefly with Mr. Hall before the door opened behind her; she pasted a smile on her face and prepare herself to meet the person she needed to complete this deal. She turned around to find the most beautiful man she had ever seen smiling back at her, and her heart dropped to her knees.
Jake braced himself for a small war of the wills that would, of course, end in his victory. He was not prepared for the reaction that seeing Ms. Smith had on him. He lost all thought and felt a shiver from the top of his head to the souls of his feet when his hand touched hers, and a cold chill where her touch had been when he let go. He felt like he was home in her presence and knew at that moment that this beautiful woman, all five-foot eleven, black-haired, blue-eyed wonder of her, with all her beautiful curves was going to be his wife, come hell or high water.
He gave a small chuckle. Charles’ plan had at that moment become clear, that little rascal. God bless him. He knew he was not selling off part of the family business. He knew the 10% of the company he sold Jake would one day be back into the family again.
Landon Hall escorted both parties to the inner office to go over the proposal and his clients offer for closure on his end. “Ms. Smith, as you know, I represent Mr. Logan’s business dealings. Mr. Logan and I have spent a great part of the morning going over your proposal and I do have to say, Ms. Smith, Mr. Logan and I agree we are most impressed with the proposal you have drafted and see no room for change or improvement. I do not think that even I could have done a better job with this proposal; I can see your father has left his company in very capable hands.”
“Thank you, Mr. Hall and Mr. Logan. You are correct that my father has well prepared me for the day I would assume the head of the table in my family’s business. Mr. Logan can rest assured that I will continue to uphold my family’s success and position in this industry that we have spent years building. Mr. Logan has no worry about his stake in the business as long as I sit at the head of the table.”
As she spoke, Jake could not help but be in awe of her, the perfect shape of her nose, her strong set jaw, and her beautiful full lips that begged to be ravished by him till she pleaded for mercy, and they would be. Jake always had gotten exactly what he wanted when he set his mind to it. And as he listened to her speak, her voice as warm as honey, he had a vision of her.
She would be all laid out on his bed begging him to stop as he kissed her all over, that silky voice calling out his name in the heat of the moment, begging him for mercy, for which he would show none as he ravished every inch of her.
“Jake!”
It took him a moment to realize that Landon was calling his name.
“Sorry,” Jake said.
“Well,” Landon stated, “I was just telling Ms. Smith that you had one small provision before you signed the contract; would you like to explain it to her?”
Lucy swung her chair around to look him fully in the eyes, instantly regretting it. Lucy usually dominated a meeting; in fact she usually commanded attention and had others feeling as if they were the small ones in the room. But this was not the case with Jake Logan; in fact he made her feel like a second seat. What was it about him that made her feel as if she was here to listen? Yes he was absolutely the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. Yes, he had the most gorgeous sea-green eyes she had ever seen and not an ounce of fat on him, unlike her. She was what they considered chubby. A man like Jake would never be interested in a chunky woman, ever. He probably had a string of blonde size-zero bimbos at his beck and call. Not that she cared. She had no time for him, or any man for that matter! She was thinking of how his voice could warm her on a cold winter night when her brain finally caught up to exactly what it was he was stating, and at that moment she recoiled.
“What? Did I just hear you say that you want to be the captain for this shipment, Mr. Logan? And what type of credentials do you have? Do you realize I am staking my family’s name on this? Everything my family has spent their lives building since the end of World War II? Sir, I mean no disrespect; I do know my father knew you better than I or he would not have sold part of the business to you. But you must understand, Mr. Logan, I do not know you, or anything about you! I have seven days to research and find a captain and I do not have time for wannabe captains. I do not see how you could possibly fill this contract, Mr. Logan. I think it would serve the company better if I found a more suitable captain. I hope you understand.”
Jake pondered this for a moment, trying to use this outcome from every angle. “Ms. Smith, I agree, you do not know me yet, but I cannot help think this is going to change very quickly. Yes, your father knew me as well as any person on this earth and I can assure you that if he were here right now, I would be the first person he called for this shipment. Now, as for my credentials and experience, I will explain them to you over dinner tonight.”
“What?” Lucy had never been so flustered in all her life. She felt this deal sinking fast and was dumbfounded that its success fell on the hands of this man and his signature. What do you mean over dinner? I need this signed now, this morning. I will be spending this whole day researching captains and do not have time for this. I see no reason why we should not settle this here and now. I have stated my position on this and do not see any reason to repeat myself. Now, if you will please sign on the dotted line, I can go about filling the position of captain!”
Jake could not help but notice how beautiful she was when she was mad. Her chest heaved with indignation and her cheeks reddened. At this moment, he knew he had to act to make her his. “Ms. Smith, I have stated my position as well. I have a prior engagement I must attend to. I will send a car around for you at 8:00 p.m. sharp. Where shall it collect you from? Will it be your office or home?”
“Mr. Logan, I must protest, I see no reason for this!”
“Ahh, Ms. Smith, if you think about it, you have every reason to see this through. You have a proposal you need me to sign and I need you to ensure me the position of captain. Now, once again, your home or your office?”
With as much indignation as she could muster, she arose to her full height and looked him square in the eyes. “I must first remind you, sir, that it is my family’s name on this company heading, and at the end of the day I get what I want. I will hear your qualifications, Mr. Logan, and that will then be the end of it, but I will be driving myself. I need no man to collect me. I will expect to hear from you by 4:00 p.m. as to the location of this meeting. Good day, sir.” And with that, she walked out the door.
Jake smiled as he enjoyed every second of watching her walk away.
“What was that about?” Landon inquired. “I thought you were just going to run it by her and if she said no then that was the end of the deal?”
“Landon, I have a new plan, and with this one, the stakes have never been higher.”

Lucy sat at her desk the rest of the morning, researching captains and making calls. One disturbing coincidence after another kept popping up. Either Mr. Logan had contacted every person before her, or he really was not only a shipping captain, but the most qualified and respected one she could find. Every person she spoke with had given her the name Jake Logan when inquiring as to who was best suited for the job. Lucy had now spent the better half of the afternoon researching Mr. Logan and his qualifications and she had to admit she was rather surprised at her findings. She had her report on her desk, and she was going to go over it with a fine-tooth comb.
By 6:00, Lucy was thoroughly exhausted. She could find no flaws in Jake’s professional resume at all. His education was top of the line, his credentials all up to date. His record of being on time was superb and he had zero losses in his years of being a captain. All in all, Lucy had to admit his resume was better than any she had researched yet. Shoot!
She had so looked forward to telling him no when confronting him with his lack of experience, but in the end, he was exactly what she had been looking for in this endeavor. Well, it still would not hurt to make him squirm a little before she accepted his terms.
He would get to see this through as captain, she thought, as she headed out the door with the address in hand that her secretary had laid on her desk earlier. But it was not going to be served up on a silver platter.
***
Jake was standing over the stove, adding the finishing touches to dinner. The delectable Lucy Smith had no idea she had been in the presence of a gourmet cook today. Cooking was a second passion and one he enjoyed immensely, although he did not get the chance to do so very often anymore; between being out to sea and then being alone when home. He relished the chance to show his prowess in the kitchen; even Gordon Ramsey himself would have no complaints. Yep, when it came to this night’s meal, he had to admit he had outdone himself, but he had his whole future at stake. For he was bound and determined to win not only the position as captain of this barge; but also as the man who won the heart of the beautiful Ms. Smith.
He started out with a slow-cooked Chicken Cacciatore served with a spinach salad with cranberry raisins, sprinkled with blue cheese crumbles and served with blue cheese dressing. And on the side, Zinfandel wine followed by a homemade key lime cheesecake.
Jake, old man, you have outdone yourself.
If this did not impress Ms. Smith, he hoped to god that his charms and dimples did.
***
Lucy pulled into the address provided, totally confused. Jake had said he would be taking her to dinner; yet this was obviously a house, his house as the name on the mailbox stated. This was not what she had hoped for. Lucy had been looking forward to a quick getaway in a public place where Mr. Logan would not dare make a scene.
Lucy prided herself in thinking quick and changing plans at the last moment, so as she reached up to ring the doorbell, she decided to re-access the situation from inside and see what the evening would bring her.
She was not expecting the electric jolt her body felt when Jake opened the door; she had thought he looked good in a suit and tie, but that was nothing compared to this Jake, with a five o’clock shadow, tight jeans and a flannel shirt. She was afraid to speak for fear her voice would give away her thoughts, Yep, Lucy was afraid that her voice would be as shaky and muddled as her body and mind were at that moment.
Jake was speechless. Lucy was the most gorgeous creature he had ever seen. She had obviously changed clothes, but with only a light brushing of make-up and her jeans and a sweater that hugged her in all the right places, she was beautiful, and he could not stop staring at her. While Jake had a smooth line ready for this moment, the effect of seeing her stand in his doorway with the sun gently setting behind her left him speechless; which had never until this moment happened; he always had word ready with a smooth delivery. Right now he couldn’t remember his own middle name.
They stood and stared at each other for a few moments, neither speaking until Lucy had cleared her head enough to think. “I thought we were going out to eat?” she stated a little put out.
“Change of plans,” Jake stated as he moved out of the door frame and invited her in. “I rarely get the chance to cook, so I thought I would give my culinary skills a whirl, seeing as they were starting to get a little rusty, I hope you don’t mind.” Jake poured two glasses of wine and handed one to her. “Cooking has always been a passion of mine, one which I have limited time to pursue. I think you will be quite surprised and delighted tonight, Ms. Smith.”
Lucy took a moment to collect herself, trying not to show surprise at this awareness of him. Lucy had a plan and she was going to stick to it. Stay calm, cool, collected and in charge. Never let him get the upper hand in the conversation, guide it in the direction she wanted it to go, and then leave. Assert her authority in the process and make him realize she held all the cards, well, except for the small detail of needing his signature to finish this proposal.
“Well, Mr. Logan, I am quite surprised,” Lucy stated as she took a sip of wine. She used this moment to decide where to take this conversation next. “Would you please share your experience and credentials in the shipping industry with me?”
“We do not have to proceed with such haste, now do we? Come, sit down and I shall answer all your questions over dinner.”
As Lucy entered the dining area, she was taken aback at the grand display before her. From the looks of it, she expected a maid and chef to come out of the kitchen any moment. The table was aligned with a beautiful lace cloth, with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers as the centerpiece. Not so high that one could not see the person across from them, but just enough to draw attention to the table. Candles sat at both ends lit the table and the overhead lighting was set to dim.
Trying not to show the surprise and approval on her face, she took a seat at the head of the table. Jake served them both and refilled their wine glasses. She would have to be careful, wine made her tipsy a little quickly and muddled her thoughts. She couldn’t help but remember a few of her days in college she would like to forget, thanks to a bottle or two. Oh, the crazy things youth will make you do. And she was already feeling the first glass.
“Mr. Logan, how is it that you came to know my father?” Lucy asked. She had always been a little curious of this since learning of his ascent into the family business.
“Well, Ms. Smith, I was young, twenty-one in fact, and had dropped out of college,” he said, his voice like silk, vibrating off every nerve ending in her body. Lucy was sure she felt him speak more than she heard him. “I was on the dock one day and sat speaking to a man who reminded me of my father. He listened to me and my dreams, asked questions and was genuinely interested in my answers. After about two hours of bantering back and forth, I excused myself, told him I was running short on time and had to finish looking for a job. That is when he introduced himself. ‘Jake, young man, my name is Charles Smith, you are standing on my dock and this is my shipping line,’ he stated as he pointed toward the fleet of ships. ‘I see a lot in you that reminds me of myself, and I would like to extend to you an offer of employment. How about it, son, a chance at a well-paying job while you see the world? If you like it, I will even pay your way through college so you can work your way up. You see this large ship here? This is the third largest cargo ship in the world. How would you like to be at the helm one day?’ I, of course accepted your father’s offer and never looked back. I felt at home on the decks of a Smith ship, and I have thanked god every day for your father. He was like a second father to me. You can rest assured that I will never do anything that would have shaken the faith your father had in me.”
Lucy listened intently, as Jake refilled her glass twice. “Well, I must say that sounds exactly like my father; he never doubted his own instincts and never second guessed his decisions. And yes, he was a wonderful, warm man, I miss him terribly. You say he paid for your education to further yourself in this business? Please, fill me in on your qualifications.”
“Well,” Jake began as he filled their glasses yet again. “I am a graduate, with honors I may add, of the West Coast Maritime College; I am skilled in all areas, not just marine transportation, but also in facilities technology, mechanical engineering, as well as global studies and international business.”
Lucy knew all this, of course, but hearing it come from him, seeing the pride on his face, hearing the sense of accomplishment that came through when he spoke of his degrees made it all seem new, like she was just finding all this out for the first time. Lucy tried to remember her game plan.
“Mr. Logan, why do you want to captain this particular run? What is so important that you feel the need to be the one in control?”
Jake thought for a moment, there was so many reasons, he was trying to narrow it down to the few most important. “Ms. Smith, not only am I the most qualified captain in the fleet, but as you know I have a monetary and personal investment in this. If all goes well with this proposal and we do indeed win the contract for this shipment, I am well aware that this moves Smith Shipping to the second largest in the industry, a position that I am sure your father would be very proud of, especially since it his daughter who took the company there. I, for one, made a promise to your father that I plan to keep. Trust me, there is no other person on this earth that could come as close as you in wanting to preserve the integrity of the name Smith as I do.”
Lucy sat staring at him for a moment, letting all he said sink in. She knew he was right, of course. And she was trying to remember what her plan was as far as a quick exit. She did not know if it was his presence or the wine, but all she could think of was how his kiss would taste. Jake could not help but notice how beautiful Lucy truly was. Her cheeks were flushed from the wine, her eyes glazed. He could not help but wish it was his kiss that brought this out in her. All he could think of was taking her face in his hand, tilting it up and feeling his tongue slide past her lips. Would she melt into him? Would she let him caress her lips with his and ravish her till neither could breathe? To end up entwined in each other, not knowing where one began and one ended. He was afraid to stand, for if he did, she would most certainly be able to see the effect she had on him; it was most evident, and he did all he could to tame it.
“Fine, Mr. Logan,” Lucy said, snapping him out of his daydream. “You shall have your wish and be at the command of this shipment. I will expect you in my office on Monday to sign the shipping agreement and lay out your course for transport so I may also add this to the proposal. As for the proposal, I would like to take it with me, signed of course. Let me retrieve it from my car and I will be on my way.”
Jake came around to her side of the table as she arose. When she did, the full extent of the wine hit her hard and she stumbled slightly and to her horror landed squarely against Jake’s chest and he caught her. As she looked up into his eyes to thank him, she saw it, the raw passion, every thought on his face and determination in his eyes.
She had no desire to stop him.
Jake had noticed her getting tipsy by the second glass, and she had drunk five. She arose too quickly, only to stumble as he reached her and she fell right into his arms. Jake knew he should be a gentleman and let her go, but she felt so right in his arms. He knew this woman was meant to be his wife and right now his thoughts were anything but gentlemanly, but it was wrong to take advantage of the situation, especially when she had been drinking.
It was at that moment he noticed she had not pulled away; in fact she was looking at him with as much passion as he felt. Chivalry be damned. He reached down and gently touched his lips to hers, parting her lips with his tongue and feeling her velvet heat intertwined with the taste of wine. He was lost, there was no going back, and he did not want to. He let his hand slide up her back to envelope her and hold her to him. She sank into him and parted her lips, and her tongue met his for a dance he could never have imagined.
Lucy could not stop him if she wanted to. The feel of his lips, the taste of him as he claimed her mouth as his own, was sending heat to parts of her body she didn’t even know she had. She felt herself move against him, felt the tightness in his chest and was lost. All she could think of was how he would feel against her bare skin, and she was determined to find out. Lucy wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back with all the passion of a woman lost, she was thirsty and she was drinking from his soul.
Jake started kissing her jaw while moving down to her throat, and she let out a moan that only stoked the embers more, urging him on till they both found release. He knew at that moment she consumed him completely, and he needed her. He raised his head and saw that same fire in her eyes; he knew she wanted him as much as he wanted her. Jake led her to the couch and gently kissed her, then hesitated, giving her a brief window to escape if she wanted, yet she did not.
Lucy reached out to him and put her hand under his shirt, feeling the quiver of his muscles as she gently caressed his abs. She knew she should stop, but her body was speaking now and it was crying out for a sweet release that only this man could give her. Lucy grew bold; she unbuckled his belt as he gently laid her on the couch. Never had she felt so free. Lucy moved down and gently ran her tongue over a nipple and heard the sharp intake of breath.
Jake moaned as he removed her shirt, feeling like he was going to explode any second, but knew he could not, because he wanted to make sure she knew she was his and no other man would ever do for her. Jake moved down and ravished one breast as his hands gently massaged her hips. Lucy started moaning and writhing beneath him as he claimed her soul as his; she did not know how or when, but Jake had managed to remove every bit of clothing she had on.
She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. And she would be his. Jake was going to claim her heart, body, and soul. He reached down and gently kissed her again then moved down and kissed her very core.
Lucy bucked against him at the feel of his lips against her heat. She had died and been brought back to life all at once, at this second she was reborn. She screamed his name as he sent her over the edge of bliss, yet she knew the best was yet to come as he gently kissed his way back up.
She could feel the throbbing of him against her leg as he moved up to claim her. He kissed her as if this was his last time and entered her in one swift move. Lucy cried out at the joy she felt at this moment and wrapped her legs around him to allow better access, she wanted all of him, and she was going to give back all she had.
Jake cried out when he entered her. This was where he belonged, her heat, the feel of her writhing beneath him, her breath hot on his neck was everything he dreamed it would be and more. He caressed her breast as he moved inside her, claiming her from the inside out. He ran his tongue across her lips as she cried out his name again. He felt her tighten around him as she reached the peak of bliss. As she arched into him, he looked into her eyes and was lost. Together they reached for the stars, and both touched them.
One tear slipped from her eye as she fell from the heavens. Lucy had never known such bliss could even exist.
Jake lay next to her and enveloped her in his arms. He had never felt such passion, such longing; he knew he would never have enough of this woman. She was the epitome of everything he wanted in a woman and more. He realized that this was most definitely a case of love at first sight. And if the look in her eyes spoke her feelings, he was sure it was for her too.

Lucy awoke as the sun was breaking through the day. It took her a moment to realize where she was. The full horror of what she had done the night before was replaying in her mind. As she berated herself for being in the wrong, her body spoke otherwise. While her mind was horrified, her body ached in places it never had and was asking for more.
All she knew was that she needed to escape. As she dressed, she heard the shower running. Now was her chance. With shoes in hand and hair askew, she bolted for the door and the safety of her own home; wondering how she was going to be able to look Jake in the eyes again and ensure that this never happened again.
***
Jake got dressed and prepared to meet the day. He had it all planned out. First, he would start by taking the delectable Lucy out for breakfast, then do some sight-seeing, cook her a wonderful dinner again and cap it off by ravishing her over and over by the fireplace.
He was taken aback when he came out of the bathroom and found her gone. No note, no nothing, just gone, only the scent of her lingered. That and the ache in his groin were the only evidence she had been there. He reached across his desk to call her and left a message as he was sent to voicemail.
Well, it appears we have a runner. He chuckled. What Lucy did not realize was that he could run much further and faster. Come hell or high water, she would be his.

On Monday, Jake Logan strolled into the outer office of Smith Shipping and introduced himself to the receptionist with the proposal signed and at hand. In Lucy’s haste to exit his presence, she had forgotten the proposal.
Lucy opened the door to her office to usher him in, ready to deal with the business at hand and escort Jake out of her office and out of her life once and for all. “Mr. Logan, please have a seat.”
Jake gave a low chuckle and there it was again, that slow burn that started low in her stomach and spread like a wildfire. She forced herself to remain calm and collected. “Ms. Smith it appears you forgot something at my house in your haste to run away.”
“I did not run away, Mr. Logan, I just did not see the point in staying any longer.”
Jake chuckled. “Had you not run, Ms. Smith, I would have spent the day showing you many reasons as to why you should have stayed.”
At this, Lucy blushed. “I must apologize. My actions from the other night were due to partaking of too much wine. I should have mentioned it sooner, but it seems as I have a two-glass limit. I can assure you that this will never happen again and hope we can both forget that night.”
Jake snorted in indignation. “Forget? I do not think that either you nor I could ever forget what happened. Not only am I not going to forget that delectable event, we are going to have many more for years to come. You see, Lucy, I plan on marrying you.”
Lucy was thoroughly taken aback. “Marry me? You do not even know me, Mr. Logan!”
“Jake, my name is Jake, and I think we can do away with the niceties, don’t you?”
“Mr. Logan, I do not see any reason to do away with the “niceties” and I assure you we will not be getting married, not now, not ever. Let me make myself clear. I have no plans of ever seeing you again after this deal is over. We have managed to not cross paths in the past and I see no reason we can’t continue to do so in the future. I trust you have signed the proposal and inserted your shipping plans, and I have taken the task of having your captain’s contract drawn up. You may take it with you and go over it with Mr. Hall. But I need it back in my office by Wednesday at noon.”
Jake chuckled at this. “You are absolutely gorgeous when you are angry, and I cannot wait to see you in this state as you lay across my bed.”
Lucy wanted to throw her pen at him and tear up the contract, but she had the company to think of.
“Now,” Jake went on, “as for the captain’s contract, I trust you. After all, I have seen the deal you drew up with the proposal and know you are fair and forth coming, so I will sign it now. As for the shipping plan, I trust we will get this deal. I will be leaving on Thursday evening for Hong Kong. I anticipate our win on this bid and I have prepared a crew and the ship for leave. It is up to you to bring home this deal, but you are a very capable woman and I trust you to do just that.”
With that, Jake signed the contract, took out the proposal and walked over to Lucy to put it in her hand personally. “Oh, and one more thing, Lucy.”
“What!” snapped Lucy, as she stood toe to toe with him, trying not to notice how good he smelled.
“This,” said Jake, as he bent down and kissed her deeply on the lips. As he pulled away, he gave a knowing grin.
“What was that for?”
“Proof!” said Jake.
“Proof of what?”
“That one day you will come around and agree to be my wife. You see, Lucy, not only did you not pull away from me, I felt you tremble at my kiss.” And with that, he walked out the door, closing it just before the pen Lucy was holding hit the door.
As much as she hated to admit it; Jake Logan was right, not only in his business plan but also in her reaction to his touch.
Lucy sent the proposal to her client on Tuesday. She spent the next two days dodging Jake in his determination to see her before he left. It was a battle of the wills, and she felt as she was winning.
So what was this coldness she felt as the watched the ship pull out of port on Thursday? She felt a loss, as if she was suddenly alone; and it bothered her.
***
Lucy hung up the phone with Hong Kong. She was being summoned to a meeting with the client as to which company would end with a signed proposal. She was going head-to-head with the largest shipping line in the world. Everything she had worked for hung on this contract and she was bound to see it through, even if it meant sitting in a boardroom with the gorgeous Mr. Logan.
They did not just want to speak to her, but with Jake as well. And she would have to do it if they expected to bring this deal home. She had her secretary send notice of the plans to Jake.
Lucy made plans to leave the next day and went home to pack and retrieve her passport. She had a fitful night of dreams about a gorgeous man who claimed she was going to be his wife.
As she boarded the plane to Hong Kong, she could not help but wonder what it was she would be flying into. The deal of the century for her company? Or straight into the arms of the man she was trying desperately to forget?
***
Ten days after pulling out of port, Jake got a message from the home office. It appeared that they were in a dead tie with another shipping company. The client wanted to meet with the owners of each company in person. So he would be sitting in the same boardroom as his beautiful soon-to-be wife, going head-to-head to close this deal and seal the fate for Smith Shipping and, God willing, give him time to woo and win the woman of his dreams against the exotic backdrop of beautiful Hong Kong.

Lucy’s plane touched down in Hong Kong early Tuesday morning. She could not wait to check in to her hotel and sink down in a hot bubble bath and catch a quick catnap. The eighteen-hour difference in time and the jet lag had her whipped, but she was determined to assimilate quickly so she would be sharp-witted and ready for battle come Friday afternoon. She also wanted to be fully awake and aware during her briefing with Jake on Thursday. She was determined to be ready to leave that meeting with a signed deal in hand, and Jake ready to load and leave at a moment’s notice. She had to admit, in light of the situation, Jakes plan of having ship in port and ready may have turned into an asset which may in the end turn the negotiation in their favor. She had come too far to let anything stand in the way, and she was determined to win.
Lucy ate a light brunch after her bath. Her eyes felt like lead weights as she crawled into bed. She had just checked her email for an update on Jake’s estimated time of arrival and noted he was running slightly ahead of schedule. Her heart skipped a beat; every time she closed her eyes, it was Jake’s smiling face that haunted her in her dreams.
***
Jake had turned the ship over to his first mate and went below for a bite to eat and to catch up on some much needed rest. So far the trip had been uneventful, barring one small storm. He had been thinking of the meeting coming up on Friday and could not believe his luck. He had no doubt they would come away the victors on this deal, but more importantly, this gave him the added advantage of time alone with Lucy to persuade her to his way of thinking.
He had not slept much these past two weeks. Lucy haunted him. He could smell her, taste her as she writhed under him in ecstasy in his dreams, crying out his name as she reached the top. And he always awoke in a cold sweat.
During the day, he thought of nothing but her. She was beautiful, and he could not envision life without her. But first he had to make her realize she loved him too. He could see the confusion in her eyes when they touched; he felt the tremble of her body as she sighed and leaned into his kiss and parted her lips for him. As he slept, Lucy once again screamed out his name and begged him for the sweet release that only he could give her, and once again he awoke with a start and drenched in sweat.
He knew in his soul they were meant to be and that Lucy felt it too. The only difference was he did not run from it or deny it.
***
Lucy decided to spend Wednesday doing a little sight-seeing and eating some of her favorite foods. She had spent the first half of her day going over the proposal to see if she could find any leeway for reducing the price of the bid, but she could find none. She sent Jake a notification of this.
***
Jake sat in his office, pouring over the contract to see if Lucy had overlooked anything, but she had not. It looked as if he would be arriving in port late Wednesday evening and not early Thursday morning as originally planned; this he could use to his advantage. Jake chuckled to himself as he came up with a solution that would benefit them both. He drew up the proposal and contract for her to sign. He hoped she accepted as this was exactly the kind of opportunity he was looking for. If she did, he was going to milk it for all it was worth.
***
About an hour later, Lucy’s phone beeped, letting her know she had an incoming email from Jake. As she read it, her anger rose to new heights, for he had found one way to reduce the offer significantly if she agreed. And at that moment, the only thing she could agree on is that she would strangle him if he was in front of her.
She could not believe what she was reading as she went over the proposal and contract he sent her a second time. The nerve of that man; to use her as a pawn! Jake’s offer was to wave his captain’s pay for this shipment, all $45,000 of it, to be exact, in exchange for her undivided attention until her departure on Tuesday. She would be required to spend the day with him in whatever plans he laid forth, in essence, spend every waking moment with him.
The gall of that man!
How could he expect her to sign this? How could she not? They needed leverage and that big of an adjustment to the bid could prove a huge benefit to them; well, that and the ship already in port. Lucy sat staring at Jake’s offer. She was stalling as long as she could before the inevitable would happen. She decided to wait until after dinner before she signed it and sent it back, with an attached note of course, but for now she was going to try to not let him ruin the beautiful display of sushi in front of her.
***
Jake sat looking at his computer screen with a satisfied smirk on his face. He was two hours from port and he had just received the signed deal back from Lucy. He won that battle, and he was hoping to win the war, a war of wills. If it went his way, they would both be winner.
He had five and a half days to make Lucy realize what her heart was already telling her. Jake planned on pulling out all the stops; he had spent seven years in Hong Kong after graduation. He spoke, read and wrote Cantonese as well as a native and knew every nook and cranny in this country. He had already contacted an old buddy of his and secured a junk and he planned on spending a couple of hours with her on Thursday, showing her the deserted coves and the coastline from a water view. He would take her to lunch at the famous Lin Heung Tea House. The Dim Sum there was the best in all of Hong Kong. He would follow that up by going to a few museums and land sights in the city. He hoped to end it with dinner in his suite as they went over the proposal and strategy for the next day. As for dessert, well, they would have to see. A serving of Lucy Ala Carte would satisfy his sweet tooth anytime.
Jake had changed his sleeping accommodations. Instead of sleeping in his cabin, he had reserved a suite at the Intercontinental Hong Kong on the top floor, which offered up a view of one of the most beautiful sights in the land, Hong Kong lit up at night. As he pulled into port at two in the morning, Jake could swear he felt her presence already.
He arrived at his hotel at 4:00 a.m. and took a quick shower and lay down for a nap. He had already reserved a rental car and planned on picking Lucy up at eleven. He could hardly sleep from the anticipation.
***
Lucy awoke at 9:30 a.m. and ordered breakfast. She took a quick shower and was blow drying her hair when she heard a quick rap at the door. Her heart started racing and her stomach did a summersault; it took her a moment to realize it was room service and not Jake. She allowed the busboy entry and tipped him.
As she shut the door behind her, she was hoping that she would not have that reaction everyday she was here. She tried to not let her mind wander past today. It was 10:15 when she finished breakfast and she got up to finish getting dressed and ready to meet her foe.
Lucy had just finished checking her hair for the eighth time in twenty minutes. When she heard the knock, she tried to remain calm and collected, but her insides were not cooperating with her. As she opened the door and looked at this gorgeous man, looking so collected and casual, she tried once again to have her head convince her heart she was not happy to see him. Her head lost.
Jake felt his sharp intake of breathe when she opened the door and knew she would always have this effect on him; he would never get enough of her and she was as magnificent in just jeans and a T-shirt as she was all dressed up for a board meeting. What an amazing woman, beautiful, smart, thoughtful, talented and strong. He could not believe that one day soon she would be his.
Lucy allowed him entry while she retrieved her purse. She was ready to get this day over with and prove to him he had no effect over her whatsoever. Problem was, first she was going to have to convince herself of that same thing.
“Well, you ready to start the day?” Jake asked.
“As ready as I will ever be,” Lucy said as the elevator started its descent. She could not help but wonder if it was descending into hell and delivering her into the hands of the devil himself.
As they climbed into the car, Lucy’s curiosity finally got the better of her. “So, Mr. Logan, what are the plans for the day?”
“Well, first I have reserved a junk for a few hours so you can see the beauty of the land from the water, very breathtaking, much like you!”
Lucy rolled her eyes.
Jake chuckled at her. “We will have lunch at one of the most famous restaurants in all of Hong Kong and after that a little sight-seeing. We shall end the day by going over our new strategy on the proposal over dinner.” And with that he set off for their destination.
Lucy did not know what to say. She certainly could find no flaw with his well-laid plans. She turned around to glance into the backseat and gave him a quizzical look, for two cameras lay there.
“One can’t go sight-seeing without pictures. What will our grandkids have to look back on when they want to see the week we fell in love?” Jake explained.
Lucy did not know what to say. She just turned herself forward and stared at the beauty of the city as it passed them by.
Jake parked in front of a small dock. As they exited the car, she noticed many small boats; some old, some new, some with motors, others with only sails. As Jake retrieved the cameras from the backseat, he pointed her in the direction of a man about Jake’s age. Lucy was startled as Jake greeted him in his native tongue, for she had no idea he spoke Cantonese. She was processing this new info when he approached.
“Well, we are almost ready, just going to load the cooler and we will be off for our two-hour tour,” Jake said as he gave her the most adorable dimpled smile she had ever seen. “I did not know for sure what you would want to drink, so I took the liberty of having a little of everything put in here.”
As Lucy lifted the lid she saw water, tea, colas and even fruit drinks, all ice cold.
“Well, I did know enough to not get you wine!” he said as he took her hand to help her embark.
Lucy was surprised when the man started to walk away from the boat. “Who is going to charter the boat?”
Jake threw his hands up in the air. “Are you kidding me? You have one of the best captains of any fleet right here. If I can handle a large cargo ship, I can maneuver a small junk, don’t you think?”
“I guess you have a point.” Lucy had no choice but to agree.
“I have traversed these waterways and coves many times, my love. Do not fear, you are safe with me.”
Lucy could not help but think of what he meant by safe. From the water, then yes. If from him, well, she did not want to ponder on that. What she did ponder on instead was his mention of being on these waters before. Coupling this bit of info along with his speaking Cantonese, Lucy was beginning to realize there was more to this man than met the eye. She was a little taken aback at the thought that she may be wanting to learn more, yet she refrained from asking about this knowledge out of fear it would encourage him further and that, Lucy was sure, was the last thing she wanted to do, wasn’t it?
Jake pulled out from the dock and headed out to the shoreline. He wanted to stay just close enough so she could take in the beauty of the land. The mountains in the background along with the city laid out in splendor made for a breathtaking view.
Instinctively, Lucy reached out and grabbed a camera and pointed it toward the mountains and started taking pictures. After a moment, she heard the click of a camera.
“What are you doing?” Lucy asked, for when she looked up, he was taking pictures of her.
“I wanted to take pictures of all the beauty this trip has to offer,” Jake replied. “And when I looked around, you were the most beautiful thing I see right now!”
Lucy rolled her eyes and went back to taking pictures of the shoreline, but her head was all a mess. She may have even blushed when he said that, but she hoped not. Jake did seem genuine and determined. Well, it might be time for a call to Brandy and some good old-fashioned best friend advice.
Jake pulled into Deep Water Bay alongside a breathtaking beach where locals and tourists alike were partaking of the glory that this place held. Lucy was sure she had never seen such beauty and splendor in one place; it was utterly breathtaking. She sat in awe for a moment before she started to take more pictures, silently thanking Jake for bringing the cameras.
Lucy was so absorbed in the scenery that when Jake spoke she was startled for a moment.
“This bay is on the south shore of the island, it is surrounded by those three mountains.” Jake pointed at one mountain. “That rather large beast over there is called Brial Hill, and that one over there is aptly named Violet Hill and last, but certainly not least is Shouson Hill. This area boasts a large golf course, neighborhoods and also several multi-national schools,” Jake stated with all the authority of a local resident.
If Lucy’s curiosity had not been peaked before on his knowledge of the locality, it most certainly was now. This was a lot of knowledge to research in a short period of time or he had been here before, but why? Still, she could not bring herself to ask him about his personal life yet.
On the way back to the dock, Jake filled her in on the history of the country, from how it came to be under British rule in 1841 to it coming back under Chinese rule in 1997. Lucy had to admit she was rather impressed with his knowledge of this country. He sounded like he was at home. He was so relaxed and content, like he never wanted to leave. She could not help but notice how gorgeous this mood made him.
They arrived back at the dock exactly two hours after they had left. She had to admit the man was nothing if not punctual. They climbed onto the dock and were greeted by the same man Jake had spoken to a few hours before. Jake thanked him and handed him the cooler as he made plans for the two of them to go have a few beers later in the week and catch up. Now Lucy really was curious, almost to the breaking point of asking about all she had found out about him and this country.
As they pulled out from the dock, Jake said, “Well, I hope you enjoyed our mini cruise.”
Lucy looked at him, and thought before she spoke. She did not want to sound overtly enthused. “I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This little island has a lot of beauty and sights to offer and you did well at being a tour guide.”
She chuckled when she said this and Jake took note. He loved the sound of her laugh. And yet he had only heard it a few times. With any luck, this would change by Tuesday and he would be able to hear that laugh for the rest of his life.
Jake pulled into a bustling little café, small but quaint. She could not help but notice the dated look of the place and remembered Jake had said it was a very old, but a very popular restaurant and had the best Dim Sum Hong Kong had to offer.
They sat at a little table in the corner, the waiter came around and spoke, and Jake answered in the same language then asked her what she wanted to drink.
“Hot tea with honey.”
Jake smiled. Well, that explained it. Honey was exactly what her voice reminded him of. He looked back at the older Asian man in front of him and gave him their order. The man bowed and ran off in the direction of the kitchen.
“I used to eat here a lot, back in the day. The food is magnificent and it is actually a tourist attraction. I don’t think you will have any complaints.”
Lucy took this all in, noting the comment on him being here a lot. “I actually am rather addicted to Asian food and I am beginning to think the only reason the Chinese restaurant on the corner is in business is because of me.”
Jake chuckled and Lucy realized that sound was becoming infectious to her. She was beginning to think she may have sold her soul when she agreed to his terms.
They finished eating and Lucy had to admit nothing back in the states would ever compare to the meal she just had. If not for all her loyal workers back in California, she would have given serious thought to making Hong Kong her home office. They used to have a small office in Hong Kong before her father had moved it to mainland China about five years before.
That was when it had struck Lucy as to just how Jake had been in Hong Kong and why. She realized with a start it gave her the perfect opportunity to question him but not seem personal.
“So, Jake, were you one of the men who helped move the office from Hong Kong to mainland China?”
Bingo! Jake had her hook, line, and sinker; now he just had to spend the weekend reeling her in. He signaled to turn left and checked traffic before glancing at her. “Yes, I was. I was actually head of the shipping department and was the one who was instrumental in finding the new office. I also brokered the deal, closed it and put into place the move of the offices and all personnel.”
Lucy thought on this a moment before she spoke. “My father must have had a lot of trust in you, usually he oversaw deals like personally.”
“Charles was like a father to me. He trusted me fully, even paid for my education and made sure I knew everything about this company as well as single handedly teaching me everything on the shipping business. He also oversaw my movement in the company to make sure I worked every department till I mastered it.”
Lucy was taken aback at this, for this is more than even she had gotten from her father as far as preparation came. She could not help but wonder about her father’s intentions and why she had not been made aware of Jake and his position with her father before.
She was pondering this when Jake pulled into a parking lot and turned off the car.
“Where are we?” she asked.
Jake pointed to a building on the left. “This is Madame Tussauds of Hong Kong. You know, the famous wax museum. Well, one of them at least. Come on, we have a whole hour before they close.”
Lucy was surprised, for she had been to all of Madame Tussauds except this one. She loved the craftsmanship of them and how very real they all looked. She climbed out and joined Jake.
Lucy was awestruck and it showed on her face. She was smiling ear to ear. She even allowed him to take a few pictures of her standing next to Audrey Hepburn, Angelina Jolie, and her favorite one Johnny Depp. All in all, they had a wonderful tour. He was beginning to think his plan may just have been what was needed to jumpstart this relationship.
Lucy climbed back into the car after leaving the museum and while she would not say it out loud, Jake had actually done a good job at preparing their activities. “So, what is next on your to-do list?”
Jake pulled out into traffic. He had planned on dinner in his suite while they went over their plans for tomorrow’s meeting and had hoped it would end in another session of breathtaking ecstasy, but now he had changed his mind and decided to woo her slowly. He was going to make her beg for him and he would be the utmost gentleman while doing it. Time for plan B. “Well, I thought a nice dinner while we go over tomorrow’s meeting, just a little place I happen to love, as I am sure you will too.”
Lucy noticed him turning toward the direction of the piers and assumed he was heading toward the docks to check on the ship first. She was quite surprised when he turned on Pekin Road and away from the dock. She was taken aback at the beauty of the building they pulled in front of and noticed as the valet opened her door that the name on it was Aqua.
To say she was surprised would be putting it lightly. She used to eat at their sister restaurant in London all the time when she lived there and it was one of her favorite places. She loved the variety of food cooked by the best chefs in the world; they served Italian, Spanish, Japanese as well as Chinese cuisine.
“Well, here we are.” Jake escorted her inside and up the elevators. “I think some fine dining with a grand view is just what we need to wind down from this day, what do you think?”
“Most definitely. I use to eat at their London restaurant all the time when I lived there and do miss their dishes.”
Jake escorted her out of the elevator and into the main room. He was glad to find out they had a table currently and that it overlooked the water. This was just what he was hoping for.
Lucy stood in the foyer, looking at the beautiful artwork as Jake came up next to her, put his arm out for her to hook an arm into his and stated gallantly, “Your chariot awaits, my lady.” Jake took note of the little chuckle she gave. She did not resist and took his arm right away. This was working out very well so far.
Jake pulled the seat out for Lucy before going to his side of the table. He couldn’t help but notice the look of pleasure on Lucy’s face as she looked over the water and the city. “This is magnificent, the city and all its colors lit up at night and the way the light dances off the water, the ships coming in and out. I am rather impressed by your selection, Jake.”
“Your father and I used to eat here a lot when he would fly in. He loved looking over his ships in dock and the city all lit up too.”
The server brought them their drinks and told them he would return in a moment for their order.
“My father and you were very close, weren’t you?”
“Yes, as close as a father and a son. He told me many times I was the son he never had and he always made me feel like that too.”
Lucy was going to further the discussion on this when the waiter returned.
“I will let the lady order first,” Jake said as the waiter turned toward her.
Lucy did not hesitate whatsoever. “I will have the Paccheri Verrigni tossed in a duck ragout flavored with orange and rosemary.”
Jake looked at her and was very impressed, for he just realized she had not opened the menu at all before she ordered.
“And you, sir?” the waiter asked.
“I will have the pan-seared fillet of Alaskan salmon served with green asparagus saffron sauce.”
And with that, the waiter was off.
“Well, Lucy, what is your game plan for tomorrow?”
Lucy had to think for a moment and reached into her purse and pulled out a manila envelope. “I had my secretary go back into the proposal and change the bid amount by adjusting the captain’s pay. I then had her change the availability of ship to immediate instead of two weeks from signed agreement. This is the new proposal. She sent one over to the client as well.” As she told him this, she slid the new proposal over to him for viewing. “I am impressed with you having the ship in port already and do believe it will be an asset to us at the time of negotiation.”
Jake was pleased at her praise and he agreed with her on it being an asset as well. “That was my plan. This new proposal looks air tight, as did the first one. I do believe we will win this, it is just a matter of impressing the clients tomorrow.”
As Jake looked at Lucy and saw the smile on her face, he could not help but think that if her beauty alone did not impress them, nothing would.
Dinner was served, much to their delight, and Lucy could not wait. Bigger girls like her usually shied away from eating too much while on a date. Her friends in college who were considered voluptuous to put it kindly would come home after a date and proceed to eat first. Not Lucy, she never cared what anyone thought. If they did not like her size, they did not have to be in her presence.
After dinner, Jake asked if she wanted dessert and she genuinely did not. She was stuffed. She had not had her favorite dish in almost a year and she quite enjoyed it.
Jake sat looking at her as she stared out over the water. She was everything he had wanted in a woman and more. Beautiful, brilliant, funny, quite the savvy business owner to boot and her voice melted his heart and made him think of doing things to her that to say the least, were not very gentlemanly at all. And before she left on Tuesday, he planned on doing most all of them.
Jake paid the bill and escorted Lucy out the door and into the lower lobby. While waiting on a valet to retrieve his car, he told her he would pick her up at noon for a light lunch and a last-minute briefing before the meeting. As they were pulling away from the restaurant, she assured him she was ready for battle now and most certainly would be tomorrow.
At that, Jake headed back toward her hotel.
He escorted her up to her room and kissed her cheek and headed toward the elevator. Lucy let herself in and was surprised at the loss she felt when he walked away. She was actually looking forward to being properly kissed goodnight by this man, yet it was not to be.
Jake got back in his car and headed toward the ship. He would go onboard and check in with his first mate and make sure all was well with the maintenance check they had done. He wanted the ship in tip-top shape when they headed out. It was prime storm season and they had quite a few already that packed a good punch and several ships from other companies had been lost at sea. He did not want this fate for his crew or him, yet he knew it did not matter how well they prepared, when the sea called your number, it was the sea who won every time.

Lucy waited in the foyer for Jake the next morning. It would be at least another half hour before he arrived, which gave her time to check her voicemail and email. Upon doing so, she realized she had received a new email from her secretary. Odd, it was still too early for her to be in the office. This could only mean the email was of upmost importance.
She opened the email, which read, Lucy: The opposing bidder has noted your ship in port and has commissioned their ship to head to the same port at once. It will take them approximately twelve days to reach port and they should be leaving dock as I type this. Sincerely, Mrs. Shelton.
Jake pulled into the front of the hotel, prepared to check in with valet only to find Lucy standing outside waiting for him. He hoped she was there because she couldn’t wait to see him.
“We have a new development!” Lucy said as she let herself into the car. “It appears our competitor has learned of our ship in port and has sent one of their own. Good news is that it just left port about a half hour ago and will take twelve days to reach Hong Kong.”
Jake headed toward the meeting. “This should not be a problem. On their way and already in port ready to go is two different things. I do not think that this will affect us at all in the negotiations.”
Lucy sat staring out the window. “Yes, I had come to the same conclusion also, just best to be prepared and have every bit of info at hand. I did not want to leave you out of the loop on that angle.”
Jake smiled at that. At least she acknowledged him on the business end of their relationship. “Well, you ready to meet our destiny?”
Lucy gave him a sidelong look. “Of course I am. Ready as I will ever be and prepared for battle to bring this proposal home.”
Lucy’s heart stopped as they exited the car. She had not noted how he was dressed before, but he was magnificent in his suit. He exuded confidence and professionalism and raw sex appeal at the same time, and she could not help but stare in admiration.
“Glad you like what you see!” Jake said with a wink.
Lucy was beginning to get nervous as Jake escorted her into the building and up to the third floor. She had never been this nervous before, but she had never had so much at stake either. This was the culmination of everything she had prepared for her whole life, and she was determined it would be hers.
They entered the meeting room to find that their adversaries were already seated, all nine of them. A little overkill, yet they all looked ready to do battle.
She took a seat across from them with Jake to her left and listened as the man at the head of the table.
“Welcome, everyone. My name is Trevor Lee and I am C.E.O of Lee-Chang exports. We all know why we are here today, I have brought you here as you have both entered bids and terms that meet our present needs for this shipment. This being said, I wanted to meet all of you to help me make my decision, I will begin with Doiche Shipping Lines, then will proceed with same questions for Smith Shipping.”
Lucy and Jake sat listening intently as the other side gave their answers. They gave each other knowing looks and had come to the same conclusion. The other side going first gave them the added advantage of being able to think on and prepare their answers. This was proving to be a huge plus when it came their time to speak.
“Ms. Smith, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your father, he was a very honorable and forthright man.”
“Thank you, Mr. Lee, he was, and you can rest assured that those same values have been instilled in me and I carry them on to ensure all that my father built continues to grow in the manner in which he envisioned it. We have our largest and strongest ship in port right now, the best crew in all of our fleet and the best captain the industry has to offer. This captain has never had one incidence of loss or late arrival of any cargo, nor has there been any claims made by any exporter or importer whose cargo has been placed in his hands. I have taken all precautions to insure a timely and safe delivery of your goods.”
Mr. Lee sat back a moment before speaking. “I could not help but notice that you, Mr. Logan, are the one who is listed here as the captain, I thought you were part-owner of the company, can you please explain this paradox to me?”
“Of course,” Jake replied. “I have been with Smith Shipping since my early twenties. I started by working on the deck and was groomed by Mr. Smith himself for this business. I graduated from the best maritime college that money could buy and have worked in all areas of this business, from mopping the deck to working on engines. I am skilled in the best technology that this business has to offer. I have spent twenty years of my life ensuring I was the best in every position, and I am.” Jake thought a moment before going on. “I am taking command of this shipment personally not only because I know my ability is the best our fleet has to offer, but as part-owner I am taking your shipment into my hands and taking personal responsibility for it. I am also staking my part of the business in this. Mr. Smith trusted me fully in life, and I will continue to honor his trust in me in his death.”
“I see that you also have lowered your bid price as well as you have a ship ready to go. You have also forwarded to me the engineering report from your in-port inspection, which shows the ship to be in top shape and ready to go.” Mr. Lee looked over the bids again before he spoke. “If I needed to move this shipment date up, when would you be ready to load and leave port?”
This question was directed at Lucy who, without hesitation, answered him. “Immediately, sir, we are ready to start loading as soon as we have clearance.”
Mr. Lee smiled at them and told everyone they would have his decision by 4:00 p.m.
They left the office and proceeded to the car, and Lucy hummed with excitement.
“I think we may have done it, Jake. Thank you for bringing the ship to port, I do believe this will be the factor that weighs this in our favor.”
Jake looked at the sparkle in her eye. “No, not just that, it was the reputation built over the years by your family as well as our proposal and negotiating skills that will win it.” he said with a laugh as he pulled away and headed toward the wharf.
“Well, it looks like we make a good team, Jake!”
Jake couldn’t agree more with her, in more ways than one. He dropped her off at her hotel to change and told her he would be back in an hour to pick her up. He was going to change and get ready for their evening, as he had a feeling a celebration would be in order.
They were sitting at a small outdoor restaurant when the call came in at exactly 4:00 p.m. They had won, the contract was theirs. Lucy hung up the phone and started whooping with joy as she told Jake the news.
He could hardly contain himself and gloried in her happiness. He felt like he won the lottery, twice. He was going to show her a night of celebration she would never forget.
Lucy got back in the car, elated from their win in the bidding war and asked where they were headed, even though at this point she could care less. Nothing could dim her joy right now, only add to it.
Jake stared at her for a moment. She looked so carefree and at ease, he realized this was exactly how he wanted to make her feel for the rest of their lives. “For starters, we are going to Dialogue in the Dark. Have you heard of it?”
“Yes, I have actually been wanting to experience this. It should be wonderful,” Lucy enthused.
Dialogue in the Dark was everything she thought it would be and she was surprised at how easy it was to be with Jake and talk to him. She had to remind herself several times not to fall for this man. She did not have time and with the companies soon-to-be status as the second largest in the shipping business, she realized her plans were all falling into place and she had no time for a second project at this point. She needed to keep with her plans and a man or relationship did not fall into them at all.
Jake pulled into Lucy’s hotel and escorted her up. He wanted to come in and ravish her till they both collapsed from exhaustion, but he was trying to be a gentleman. He wanted to woo her slowly, a touch here, a look there. He wanted to haunt her dreams as she haunted him. So far she had not pulled away from any of his touches, from brushing her hair out of her eyes, to holding her hand to guide her through the darkened tour, and he was elated. He hoped to be hearing wedding bells by Christmas.

The weekend went by in a whirlwind. Lucy could not believe how much this country had to offer and the sheer beauty of it. They had taken the ferry from Kowloon to Macau in mainland China on Saturday and had spent the day at Universal Studios Singapore. She was a kid at heart and could never get enough of that place and could hardly wait to take her kids there.
Kids? Goodness where had that come from? If a man was not in her plans, kids could hardly be anywhere in her near future. She had to separate herself from Jake after she went back. It was obvious he was becoming dangerous to her and her future. She had a goal and come hell or high water, she would reach that goal, but in the back of her mind, she knew she could not even remember the reason she had made that goal, or why it was important to her.
***
Jake rode the elevator up to Lucy’s room. Today was his last day and he was going to fill every minute up with her and hopefully tonight would be the night. He knocked on her door and a moment later Lucy opened it.
“Wow, you look radiant and beautiful!” Jake could not take his eyes off her for a second. She was dressed in faded blue jeans with comfortable tennis shoes and a light pullover sweater. Her hair was up in a ponytail with only a light dusting of rouge on her cheeks. She was the gorgeous, and she was his. After tonight, he hoped she realized it too.
Lucy blushed. “Thank you, you look quit handsome yourself. Let me grab my bag and we will be off! Where are we going for breakfast?” Lucy grabbed her purse and locked the door behind them.
“We are going to have a picnic on Lantau Island, then we are going to tour the Big Buddha. I thought from there we would go to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery. Then dinner at the Happy Valley Racecourse as we watch the races; all to end with a late night cocktail in my suite overlooking Hong Kong.”
Lucy was floored. He had a whole day planned out and every bit of it were things she had on her own to-do list. It was almost like he was in her head. She hoped her excitement was not showing too much, but from the look on Jake’s face, she was not hiding it well at all.
They arrived back at Jake’s suite at 10:00 p.m. and Lucy sat staring down at the city from the balcony. Amazing! This was the most beautiful skyline she had ever seen.
Jake could see the exuberance on her face when he came out and handed her a glass of champagne. “Hong Kong has one of the top ten skylines of anywhere in the world!”
“I can see why,” Lucy said. “This is definitely my favorite one so far, so enchanting and mesmerizing, I could stare at this all day.”
They went back in as there was a knock on the door and Jake went over to answer it. “Room service for my beautiful lady.”
Lucy looked at the layout before her and gave a chuckle, surprised he would think of this. There was fresh fruit and juice and whipped cream, and it looked delicious.
Jake heard her giggle and decided to give her a little kiss; he had waited all week and could wait no more. Jake reached down and tilted her head up. He saw the question in her eyes, yet he could not stop. He touched his lips to hers and felt her lips part in response. She drew him in with her taste, and he wanted more, he knew he always would. She tasted like sunshine and an ocean breeze. He was becoming addicted as he reached around and drew her closer. She arched up and met his kiss and parted her lips for more. He was going to take all she would give and make her want more.
Lucy knew he was going to kiss her, and she wanted him to. She wanted to taste him and feel his heat more than she wanted anything right now. She felt his lips touch hers and she knew in that moment she had been branded. No other man would do; no other man could make her feel like she would die if his lips left hers.
She wrapped her arms around him, inviting him to give her what her body wanted and her mind fought; a release only he could give. This man embodied everything she had ever wanted, he had just come at the wrong time. But it was only tonight. She would take what he offered and go home tomorrow and forget about him, wouldn’t she?
Jake kissed her neck and heard her groan. He moved down and unbuttoned her blouse, kissing where each button had been and letting it fall to the floor. He removed her bra slowly and ran his tongue around one nipple and then went to the other breast as he felt her shiver and put her hands in his hair and pull him forward. He pulled her pants off as he continued ravishing her breast and as he laid her on the blanket in front of the fire, he parted her legs, touching her most feminine parts as he went back to ravishing her mouth. Their tongues danced the dance of lovers; he gently rubbed her rose bud and felt her arch into his hand. He heard his name as she cried out in ecstasy.
Lucy thought she was going to die, but wanted to make him feel as much as she did and make it go on forever. She surprised him by moving his hand away as she reached down between them. She could feel the bulge in his pants, aching for release. She could feel the pulsing as she unzipped his pants and wrapped her hand around his manhood. He moaned and arched toward her and she felt emboldened. She removed his pants and shirt and stared at him. He was the most magnificent specimen of a male she had ever seen. And for this one moment, he was hers. She ran her tongue down his stomach and felt him quiver, heard the sharp intake of breath and continued down as she rubbed his throbbing member. She took the tip of his manhood and ran her tongue over it, as Jake cried out her name.
Jake was dying, he had to regain control or it was going to be over before it began. She made him feel like no other woman had and he wanted more and he could wait no longer. He pulled Lucy up to him and pulled her under him. He looked in her eyes, all smoky and glazed over, and knew she was as ready as he was. He could feel the heat coming from her and he could not wait for that heat to wrap around him, bringing him as close to heaven as he could get. He entered her slowly. He did not know if it was to tease her or him, either way, he was about to lose it.
Lucy felt him enter her and realized this was what she had waited for her whole life, this completion, this soul-searing claim this man was staking on her with every thrust. She arched upward, meeting him with every movement, trying to get him deeper in her body and soul. She felt the heat rise and knew she was reaching the point. She started to moan aloud, yelling his name as she shattered, free and flying through the clouds, every muscle in her body shivering as she wrapped tighter on his member, draining every bit of life from him.
He felt Lucy start to shiver, heard her call his name. He tried to call her name but it was lost on his lips as he soared through the clouds, every ounce of being flooded into her and he was spent. He knew it would never be like that with anyone else. His heart was lost to her. He moved to the side and drew her to him and wrapped her in his arms as he felt tears slide down her cheek.
He did not ask, he knew; he felt it too.
***
Jake awoke to find Lucy gone and a note on the table. He read it and could not believe it, not after what they had been through this last week.
Jake, thank you for the wonderful week, but we knew this day would come. I have no room in my life for a relationship. I am sorry but I will not be able to continue this once I get back to Los Angeles. I wish you well and hope you find someone worthy of you, Lucy.
Jake ran to the bedroom and got dressed. He loved her, would give up all for her and he had to tell her. He was racing against time; her plane would be leaving shortly.
***
Lucy boarded the plane with a heavy heart. Why was fate so cruel to her? She was getting all she wanted in her business and fate had given her the man of her dreams, but the timing was all wrong; she could not have both, not now. Not when she was so close to seeing her personal hopes and dreams come true. She sat down in her seat and buckled her seatbelt as the plane took off.
She did not see the man at the window in the terminal calling her name, feeling as if he was dying on the inside as he watched the plane pull out on the runway and take off.

Jake watched as Lucy’s plane lifted up toward the heavens. This was not what he had planned for a sendoff, that’s for sure. He knew in his heart that Lucy loved him as much as he loved her. He had hoped after last night she would finally admit it to herself. She was so focused on her career she could not see anything else, least of all him. But she would not be rid of him that easy. When he got back to Las Angeles he was going to move back into his old office; right across from hers. He was bound and determined to make Lucy see she could have it all.
***
Lucy couldn’t concentrate on the work in front of her during the flight. All she could think of was Jake and the amazing night they had. She wished things were different. But she was too close to seeing her goal come to light and she had no room for any distractions right now, especially a distraction as good looking as sexy as Jake Logan. He made her heart melt and her knees go weak, and she had no time for that right now. She had to admit this last week with him had been amazing, but she had a promise to keep, not just to herself, but her father as well; love would have to wait.
Love! Now where had that come from, she wondered as she reached up to turn the overhead light off. It was going to be a long flight, and she was feeling the jet lag already.

Jake spent all day Wednesday onboard the ship, making sure everything was ready. They would begin loading on Thursday and should be done sometime Sunday afternoon. He planned on leaving port on Monday. He sent the plans to the main office and to the client as well. Late that evening, he was double checking the weather radar and what to expect in the next two weeks while at sea. It appeared they would have smooth sailing, except for one small storm; the rest of the trip was looking to be rather uneventful. It was shaping up to be his easiest shipment to date.
By Sunday night, Jake was exhausted. They had been loading the ship for 24 hours straight since noon on Thursday. They were checking to make sure everything was buttoned down and he was signing off on all paperwork and taking possession of all cargo on board. Jake sent notice and copies of all paperwork to the client and head office, as was his usual routine. They would be departing first thing in the morning. It was going to be a long two weeks knowing Lucy was waiting for him at the end of it.
***
Lucy noted Jake’s departure time and his charted course. She filed all the paperwork and noted all shipments were received in dock and loaded on time without incident. She was grateful and hoped the rest of the trip went just as well; they had a lot riding on this contract.
Lucy had ignored all personal emails from Jake and only opened the ones related to business. She couldn’t bring herself to read them, not yet. What if he was mad at her? Or worse, what if he told her she was right all along and they were better not seeing each other! What if he told her he loved her? She just did not think she could handle any of those probabilities, not now.
Over the last three days she had picked up the phone several times to call him, to say she was sorry for the way she had left; that she was sorry for thinking the way she did; that she had been wrong and she would be at home waiting with open arms; that somehow her goals just did not seem that important to her anymore. When she thought of her plans and how close she was seeing them unfold, she no longer felt the excitement that she used to. The thrill was gone. It had been replaced by visions of Jake. Damn him! With this new knowledge of herself, she set off for her best friend Brandy’s and a much needed cry, she may even do that before the pizza and wine.
***
“All hands on deck!” Jake gave instructions to the crew as he guided the cargo ship out of port and into open waters. Even now, Jake could think of nothing but Lucy. He had been sending her emails and had gotten none in return, not even an acknowledgement she had seen them.
It looked like she was digging in her heels for the long fight. He had to give her credit, even if she was going to lose in the end. Lucy was not the only one who got what she wanted! And he had too much to lose to give up on her, not now. He would show her that he was just as stubborn as she was. “We have cleared port, pull hard starboard, full steam ahead.” And with that, Jake went below for a bite to eat.
***
“Lucy, you are a grown woman; you can have it all if you choose to. Why do you think you can only have either a personal life or a business life? You can have both and the sooner you realize this, the happier you are going to be, you will see,” Brandy said as they waited for the pizza later that night.
Lucy thought for a moment about that. “I have a charted course planned and it has worked well so far. I am close to seeing my goal met; I can’t give it up, not now!”
“Why would you have to give it up?” Brandy asked. “Did Jake ask you to give it up to stay home and pop out babies and have dinner on the table when he came home from the office?”
“Well, no,” Lucy admitted. “But relationships need a lot of time put into them to make them work, time I do not have, not at this pivotal point in my life.”
“Lucy Smith!” Brandy cried. “I am rather shocked at you, both Jake and you have the same interest at heart, Smith Shipping. He seems to be completely crazy for you, from all that you have told me, and it is obvious you are in love with him.”
“What!” Lucy choked on her coffee. “No one said anything about love; I most certainly am not in love with Jake Logan!”
Brandy laughed loudly. “You don’t have to say it, Lucy. I can see it. We have had more conversations about this man in the last two weeks than all the men you ever dated in all the years I have known you.” Brandy took another drink of her coffee and sat it down. “As a matter of fact, I have never seen you this confused over anything at all before, ever! You think of him all day and said you dream of him each night; and you all but admit you can’t trust yourself to be alone with him for fear of ending up naked and twisted up tighter than a pretzel. You have a serious case of you have met you’re match, and I must say, I am rather jealous.”
Lucy laughed at that remark. “Maybe I should introduce you to his attorney, Landon Hall. They went to college together and I must say, he is equally as tall and gorgeous as Jake is.”
Brandy looked at Lucy and with a mischievous grin. “Well, if you are going to let Jake slip through your hands, I may just have to help him pick up the pieces, he sounds absolutely delicious!”
“Oh no you won’t!” Lucy cried. “Over my dead body!”
Brandy hooted in glee and pointed at Lucy with tears running down her face. “You should have seen the look on your face. If looks could kill, I would be leaving here in a body bag. Yeah, it’s love all right!”
***
Jake was on Skype with his best friend and attorney Landon.
“Jake, about time you checked in. How’s it going?”
“Good,” Jake said. “Ship is loaded; I have left port and I’m headed home, finally.”
Landon chuckled. “This I know. What I meant was, how is it going with the beautiful Ms. Smith?”
“Great, except for one small detail, but I will have that all ironed out and smoothed over when I get back to Las Angeles.”
“What did you do?” Landon asked. “Run her off already with all your boring tales of the high seas?”
Jake laughed. “Well, they don’t seem to run you off. You listen to each and every one.”
“I have to, old pal, you have me on retainer and with what you pay me, I will sit through all of them.”
“You’re right; you better laugh at every joke too with the bonuses you get! But no, nothing that serious, just a small bump in the road. I will pursue her till she comes around, shouldn’t take long, I hope.”
“I hope so, Jake, I really do. Charles had actually hoped you two would fall in love. To be honest with you, the old geezer has actually left money here at the office for your wedding and honeymoon, I know he was a genius at anything business, but I might say that if you guys do end up hitched, that may prove to be his best consolidation ever.”
Jake had to agree, on all of it. He left instructions with Landon to inform Lucy’s secretary that he would be moving back into his office there at corporate headquarters and to please have it furnished and ready when he arrived in port, but to send the bill to his accountant. This one he would gladly pay out of his own pocket; after all, it was personal.
***
Lucy came back from lunch on Thursday to find office furniture being carried into the empty office across the hall from hers. “What’s going on?” Lucy asked her secretary. “I did not commission this!”
“No,” said her secretary. “Mr. Logan did. He said an email was sent to you detailing this change.”
“Oh,” said Lucy. “I have been so busy I must have missed that one. I will check it momentarily. I just closed a new deal this morning; I will be sending the contract to you in a moment, please review it and send a copy to the client. I will also be sending all shipping details, please review and forward to Jeb at the dock. Oh! And hold all my calls for me for the next half hour, I have another proposal I need to go over.”
Lucy went into her office, closed the door, and sank into her chair. She hoped the scene being played out across the hall did not mean what she thought it did. She would have to check her emails from Jake to see what his intentions were.
As she opened the one titled New Office, it appeared her fears where confirmed: My beautiful Lucy, I will be moving back into my old office, the one across from yours, when I reach port. This is to not only help you and be more hands on with the company, seeing as it will now be the second largest shipping company on the open seas, but to also further my pursuit of you in making you my wife. When I get to port I will be hungry. You pick; what would you like? Italian or Chinese? All my love, Jake.
Oh, the nerve of that man! What was she going to do now? She thought she had made herself perfectly clear with her intent of not pursuing this further! And yet here he was, acting as if she had no say so in the matter whatsoever. And there was nothing she could do about it. She knew the leeway left to Jake by her father, just as she knew he had previously occupied that office. But she figured he would just continue playing captain after her rebuttal. Apparently, she thought wrong. Time for a plan B; funny, she had never needed a plan B before Jake, now she seemed to need one every time.
***
Jake sat looking at the Doppler radar. The storm had turned and merged with another small cell and was picking up steam at an alarming rate. If the storm kept on its current path, they would run into it dead on and there was nothing they could do about it. He could either turn into it or away from it, but even then it would catch them. His best plan was to continue on course, batten down the hatches and prepare the crew.
He sent an email to Lucy’s secretary, letting her know of this new development and an approximate time they would be running into the storm. They were six days away from port and it looked to be about two days away from one nasty storm. He would keep an eye on the storm and reassess the situation in another twelve hours before sending off an email to the client informing him of the situation and a possible small delay; right now he had a crew he needed to brief.
***
Lucy got a text alert from the dock on Saturday. She had not been feeling well the last two days and wanted to get something to help her stomach. She was sure it was all Jake’s fault; he had her nerves all worked up and her mind frazzled. Even her secretary was beginning to notice. Apparently she had forgotten to put a bid price on a proposal yesterday; she was glad she has everything checked out by her secretary before she sent them.
Lucy opened her text from Jeb and read it, becoming a bit worried as she did so. Ms. Smith, received notice from Mr. Logan, they will be running into a large storm on Thursday. I will be checking this periodically throughout the day and week as this storm may cause a small delay in arrival time. I will notify you of any new developments. Jeb
Lucy couldn’t believe her luck. She was going to get a few extra hours or maybe even a whole day to ready herself for the inevitable meeting with Jake. With that, Lucy took a bite of her bagel and her stomach recoiled. Damn that Jake Logan, this was all his fault!
***
Tuesday afternoon, Jake and his first mate sat looking at the radar with utter fear etched on their faces.
“Jake, I have never seen anything like this and we have no way to avoid it either. We will be lucky to come out the other end all in one piece, if at all.”
Jake hated to admit it, but Alex was right. “We can’t turn back, it’s coming too fast. I have never seen a storm grow to this size in this small amount of time nor have I ever sailed through one this big. We need to inform the crew and keep with our current plan.”
Jake sent off an email to Jeb at the dock, and just in case, he made a very personal letter to Lucy but saved it. He would send it later if he felt things were not looking good for them. He just hoped he was able to say all that in person instead.
***
Lucy stayed in bed all day Sunday. Brandy came by with some soup, 7-up and crackers. Brandy had assured her it would work, and Lucy could only hope she was right.
By Monday, Lucy had to admit that the crackers and 7-up were doing the trick. Lucy told Brandy that on the phone and all she got in return was a high-pitched squeal and a giggle and the click of the phone. She did not have time to call her back to see what that was all about as she was on the freeway headed toward the docks. Jeb had asked for a personal meeting.
He had never done before; Brandy would have to wait.
Lucy arrived to find the dock full and men running everywhere. She hurried up to Jeb’s office to see what was so urgent.
“Ms. Smith, thank you for coming at once.” Jeb escorted Lucy into his office. “We have a major development. It appears that the storm we have been keeping an eye on has grown in size and strength.”
Lucy stared at him a moment before she spoke. “What are we talking about in terms of size?”
“It is the largest storm I have ever seen in my thirty-three years in this business. I have seen ships lost in much smaller storms.”
Lucy was floored. “Can they turn around? If not, how long will it take them to clear the storm’s path?”
Jeb stood up and motioned Lucy to follow him to the radar screen. “They are currently here where you see this green dot blinking; they should enter the storm here.” Jeb as he pointed to a spot on the screen. “With any luck, they should clear the storm in approximately three to five hours, god willing.”
Lucy could not help but note the fear in is voice. “Ok, I will keep my phone on and next to me at all times. Call me as soon as you hear anything at all; no matter how small.”
***
Jake was on deck, watching the scene playing out before him. In about a half an hour, they would be entering that beast. Never had he seen a storm so huge and angry. The sky looked like pure hell and they were about to sail into the belly of Satan himself. Jake had a momentary thought of being chewed up. He just prayed it spit them out the other side, safe and intact. Jake went back to check in with his first mate and inform the crew. The time was upon them, everyone needed to prepare for the fight of their lives.
Twenty minutes later, the swells towered over the ship. They had pulled full into the oncoming storm, heading straight into the swells. This maneuver was their only chance; if one of these swells hit them on the side they would roll straight over and sink to the bottom. Their only chance was to ride the swell to the top and hope to come down on the other side safely. The swells were coming in faster and faster and rising further into the sky.
Jake had promised his crew they would all get home and they would; he would make sure of that. He looked at the screen and saw they were almost out of the storm. Another thirty minutes and they would clear it, but the tail end was the worst of it. His cell phone lit up, showing he had a signal; this may be his only chance.
He opened his email and hit send. Lucy would have his email when she next checked it. A few seconds later, he lost signal again.
Jake sat staring at the screen for a moment before he heard, “Captain, dead ahead!” Jake looked up just in time to see the largest wall of water he had ever seen, and it was headed straight for them. He hit the warning button, signaling everyone on the ship to brace for impact. If they survived this, they could survive anything; at that thought, the whole ship shook as it rose and all went black.

Unable to stand being at work while she waited for news, Lucy called Brandy and asked her to meet her at her house.
“They entered the storm about two hours ago. They get a brief signal every now and then from the ship. The storm is preventing definite contact,” she told Brandy when she arrived.
Brandy sat down next to Lucy and hugged her. “Look, you have the best captain in the business and have had the best of luck. Pray that it continues through this situation. You will see Jake come pulling into port right on time Monday.”
“I hope you’re right, but it is not Jake’s ability that worries me, it is the storm itself. Ability does not mean much in a storm like this.”
Brandy reached out and grabbed Lucy’s hand to comfort her. “It means everything, everything, and so does faith. You need to have faith in Jake and the crew.”
Lucy sat staring ahead out the window. She couldn’t help but note how calm and sunny it looked outside. From here, you would never know the fierce storm that was playing havoc with Jake and the crew. “What if something happens and I never see him again? Why do I feel so sick at that thought, so empty?”
Brandy wrapped her arms around her as Lucy began to sob. “Maybe because you already know the answer to that question; you love him!”
Lucy began to cry in earnest as Brandy handed her a tissue. “Yes, I do! And he may never know! How could he? I didn’t even know.”
“He knows,” said Brandy. “He has told you as much with his actions. He loves you, Lucy; don’t let a thirty-year-old dream come in the way of your future with him.”
Lucy knew in her heart Brandy was right, as always. She was in love with Jake Logan, and had been the moment she laid eyes on him. Nothing she did was ever going to stop that; she just had to accept it, as Brandy had said so many times before. Suddenly she had the urge to make it right, to tell Jake she was sorry and that she loved him.
Lucy grabbed her computer and opened her email. She was about halfway through when an email came in; she disregarded it and kept writing. She needed to tell him everything and nothing was going to stop her. She poured out her heart to him and made a new promise, to him, herself and her father. She promised to love Jake till death do them part, to make him a part of the business and to have many children to carry on her father’s work. And she promised to never doubt Jake or his love for her, ever. She closed out and hit send, praying the whole time it got through to him and he read it.
Brandy had gone to make coffee and she handed Lucy a cup. “He will get it, Lucy, have faith.”
As she sat down, Lucy checked her inbox; she worried the incoming email may have been from Jeb. “It is an email from Jake, it came while I was writing him, I ignored it without seeing who it was from!”
“Well,” said Brandy. “Open it.”
Lucy did just that and began reading to herself, weeping silently: My beautiful Lucy, If you get this, know that I love you with my whole heart and I plan on spending every single day of my life showing you just that. I will never make you give up your dreams. I will only be there to cheer you on and support you while you go after them. If anything happens during this storm, know that you were the first thing on my mind when I woke up and the last thing I thought of before we went down. I love you, Lucy, heart, mind and soul. You are mine as I am yours; you have branded me forever. All my love, Jake.
As she reread this she started to cry in earnest. Brandy pulled her closer as she read the message from Jake. “He wouldn’t send this if he was sure that they were going to be fine, Brandy. I know Jake, he wouldn’t!”
Lucy couldn’t wait anymore. She had Brandy drive her to the dock. They should have come out of the storm over an hour ago and yet she had heard nothing yet. She entered the dock in a pair of sweat pants and a T-shirt; hair disheveled and bloated red eyes. She noticed as she passed that no one could look her in the eyes, they all turned away when she looked at them.
She broke into a run and did not bother knocking before she opened the door. Jeb and Landon huddled over the radar screen. “They’re gone, the whole crew and Jake, all gone!” Landon said mournfully.
That was the last thing Lucy heard before she hit the floor.

Lucy awoke in a hospital room two hours later. One look at Brandy and it all came flooding back. Lucy started crying and screaming Jake’s name. Brandy came over and held her close. “Lucy, they do not know yet if the ship is lost. They simply have yet to make contact. This could mean many things, as you know. How many times have you lost contact with a ship due to a malfunction in equipment? And in a storm like that, it is easy to lose a signal from wiring getting knocked around.”
Lucy shook her head; in her heart she knew this. Many times over the years they had lost contact with a ship; only to have it come limping into port a few days later. She prayed this was the case.
At that moment, the doctor came in. “Ms. Smith, I understand you have had some rather unsettling news and I am sorry to hear that. All your tests came back ok and you do not have a concussion from the fall so we will be releasing you. We do, however, have one test result we need to go over with you. Ms. Smith, did you know you are almost four weeks pregnant?”
Lucy did not think she had heard him right. “Pregnant! No, I did not!” She looked at Brandy with a haunted look and it was all becoming clear. The sickness in her stomach that would not go away, she had also been getting tired easy, even taking a few naps at the office. But never had being pregnant come to mind. A baby! And Jake would never know!

Jake and Alex stood on deck, looking up at the stars, glad to be alive. “From the looks of it, we should limp into dock sometime tomorrow afternoon.”
Alex concurred and noted the Coast Guard helicopters in the distance. Unfortunately with no running lights they had not been able to see the ship. Jake sent a crew member down below for the emergency kit with the flair guns in them. Next time they turned back toward this direction, he would set one off in the hopes they seen it and send word they were all ok and headed home.
Jake went down to the engine room. That wall of water had ripped all the antennas down and had stalled one motor. While they had come out of the storm, they did so barely. But all cheered at the first glimpse of real sunlight as they broke the edge and the water calmed down to a somewhat normal level. There was nothing they could do to get the ship back up and running as far as communication went. He was glad he kept his manual equipment with him and knew how to read a compass and guide by the stars; for this looked to be the way he would get them home. As far as the motors went, half was better than none; they would go at half speed so as not to overwork the motor they had left. They may be a couple of days late; but late was better than never. And you know what they say; absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe when it came to Lucy, this would be the case.
They next day, Jake and Alex stood on deck and watched for the helicopter again. They saw chopper lights in the distance and shot off one of the flare guns into the sky. It worked, the flare had been spotted and the helicopter turned and headed toward them. When it got near enough, Jake and Alex turned on several flashlights and pointed them toward the chopper.
“Woo hoo!” exclaimed Alex. “Looks like we have been found! Everyone should know we are ok and headed home in about an hour.”
Jake looked up as the chopper hovered above. He watched as the man repelled down from it and landed on the deck of the ship a few feet away. “Hello, glad you have finally found us; we have one motor and are slowly but surely creeping toward port. We should dock about Wednesday, can you send word back for us?”
“Absolutely,” said the man. “We have been looking for you for a few days, glad to see you are all safe and sound, what happened?”
“Rogue wave, about sixty feet high hit us dead on, took out all the communication antennas and one of the motors. Blew the entire electrical grid as well but we were able to repair that. Just been slow going and worry for our loved ones, I am sure they think by now we have sunk,” Alex replied.
“Well, I will take the message back up with me. We have notified the main Coast Guard station that we have located you and will follow up with your condition. Does anyone here need medical attention?”
“I do have one crewman who received a nasty bump to the head in the impact; I will send him back with you for a check-up and observation.” Jake went below to notify the crew and retrieved the injured man.
While he was there he wrote a brief note to Jeb and instructions for the person delivering it. He thought of Lucy and what the future may hold for them.
Jake watched as the helicopter flew off into the night, grateful they did not have to wait till they reached port for all to know they were ok. Christmas was two months away and there wer going to be many happy families this year with much to be grateful for. And he was one of them. He was so grateful to have found Lucy and to love a woman like her. He was grateful for the chance to be able to tell her in person as he looked down into her beautiful face. He was grateful to get the chance to hold her and love her again. And he was not going to waste a second of their life together, not one.

Lucy sat in the dock watch tower and listened intently to the search team when suddenly she heard it, what she had been waiting for. “We have spotted The Abigail and are making contact; please await further instructions.”
“They found them, they are alive and making contact now!” she yelled.
“What?” exclaimed Jeb as he crossed the room and grabbed the transmitter. “Coast Guard, this is Smith Shipping, I understand you have located the missing ship and crew?”
“Yes,” came the reply. “We are awaiting further reports on the condition of the ship and crew, we will advise you in a moment when we have them! Out.”
Jeb looked up with tears in his eyes. “They’re alive, thank you God, they’re alive!”

Jake pulled into dock and came to a stop and the crew secured the boat. He could see Lucy standing on the dock; she was even more beautiful than he remembered. He was drinking in her beauty like a man who had been lost in a desert. And in a way he had, if only briefly. He lowered the stairs and started to descend when all the men started to move to the side. He heard his name and looked up.
Lucy was running up the stairs with tears in her eyes. She reached the top and threw her arms around him as she kissed him, calling out his name and begging him to never leave her again, ever. Jake knew at that moment she was his forever, and he was the happiest man on earth.

Later the evening, after they had dinner with Brandy and Landon, who seemed to really be hitting it off, Jake and Lucy went back to her penthouse apartment.
Jake poured them both some champagne and came to sit down beside Lucy. He held his glass up and tapped hers. “Cheers, here is to our future.”
Before he took a sip, Lucy looked up at him, amazed at his strength and could not believe he was all hers. She was thinking of their future when she heard her name. “Lucy, your wine, you’re not drinking any; are you ok?”
Lucy realized it was now or never, and she couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when he found out. “Jake, when I passed out the day when we realized you may be missing and I was taken to the hospital, one test came back with an answer I was not expecting to hear.”
Jake looked at her for a moment, worry lines creased his face. “What’s wrong? Are you ok?”
She nodded. “I’m pregnant.”
Jake was momentarily shocked before he gave the biggest whoop she had ever heard as he stood up and pulled her with him, dancing across the room. He stopped and took her face in his and kissed her deeply. “Lucy, marry me! I told you I wanted you forever. Please say yes, Lucy, please!”
“Yes! I want more than anything to be your wife, Jake.”
Jake held her as they both wept. They knew they were about to set out on an adventure so few people get to make. A lifetime with their soul mate, and they were going to cherish every moment of it.

Jake went into Landon’s office on Monday. He couldn’t be happier and it showed in his walk.
“Jake, you are looking well, my friend. I see the thought of the old ball and chain weighing you down sits well with you. I am happy for you both. I had you come here to give you this. Mr. Smith left it with me for when this day came. He was so sure you two would find each other and fall in love. He thought the world of you, Jake.”
“I miss the old man; he was like a father to me. If not for him, who knows where I would be right now? I know Lucy would not be in my life and for that alone I owe him a debt of gratitude.” Jake reached up and took the envelope. He noted Charles’s handwriting on the front and that the envelope was made out to both Lucy and Jake.
“There is one provision,” Landon told him with a smile. “You have to read it together, Lucy and you; at the same time.”
Jake laughed whole heartedly at this. “That ornery old man! Well, he always knew his business well, and I gather he knew Lucy and me better.” With that, he headed out the door and back to his office, he had a contract to finish and a date to make with his future wife!
After dinner that night Jake pulled out the envelope. He had filled Lucy in on this new development from her father that afternoon. They had both spent the day in anticipation of what was in it; but both deciding to wait till they were home to open it.
Jake took out the letter and read it aloud as Lucy sat beside him, her head on his chest.
“My dearest daughter and son-in-law: If you are reading this, my intuitions were right and you are married or soon to be married. And unfortunately, I am not there to witness this. I want you both to know how much I love you and wish nothing but happiness for you. Lucy, my beautiful daughter; the spitting image of my beautiful Abby. You are my greatest accomplishment in life, never a moment when you have not made me feel as if I was the luckiest father on earth. Jake, my boy, If ever I would have had a son; you are exactly what I would have wanted in one. I consider you my greatest find in life. And as you both grew and matured into the people you are today, I knew the two of you would share something special. If you are reading this now; I consider your marriage my greatest merger ever. And know I am with you in heart always. I leave my business in your hands, Lucy. But in Jake I leave my life, my heart and soul; my Lucy. Take care of her, Jake; as I know she will you. Love, your father.”
Lucy had tears streaming down her face as Jake read this. She did not realize how much of a part her father had played in all of this. She knew now why he sold part of the business. It was to keep Jake around so they could find each other. And it had worked.
Jake was staring at the letter with tears in his eyes too. She patted her belly and silently thanked her father, he was right; this was his best merger ever.

The next two months passed so quickly; too quickly actually. Lucy and Brandy had barely pulled it off when it came to the wedding and the planning. Lucy had met Jake’s mother and they had loved each other instantly. She was a warm caring woman who was waiting anxiously for her first grandchild. Brandy and Landon had fallen in love, and Lucy knew her friend would not be far behind her in this walk down the aisle. She thought of this as she put on her dress and had her make-up done.
Lucy sat at the end of the bed, holding the necklace her mother wore on her wedding day. This was the something borrowed. She decided the something blue would be her heart; sad that her parents were not here to see this day. She looked up at the portrait of her father; so handsome and strong. Much like Jake. Tears welled in her eyes and threatened to spill over.
She fought them back; she did not want to ruin her make-up before the ceremony. As she stared at her father, she whispered to him, “Thank you, Daddy, for all that you taught me and gave me in life; but mostly for Jake. You were right about him all along. He is a wonderful man and no one else will do.”
Brandy opened the door and took Lucy’s hand. “Are you ready?”
Lucy smiled. “More than you will ever know. Let’s do this; I have a promise to keep.”
