I kept looking to Ghost for ideas on what to do. Unfortunately his expression was as blank as mine. Ghost was a researcher and an observer, but he did not have a chance to stake this place out or study its design.
Oddly enough, it was Buck who came to the rescue. We were sitting there brainstorming how we could get in and extract KC when he came up with a very simple idea. “We need to cut off their power,” he said.
“Why?” asked Nemesis. “So we can punish them with discomfort?”
“Think about it, what has been your greatest weapon these past few days? What helped you get this far?”
“The dead,” replied Ghost without hesitation. “Without their insight, their direction, and their ability to distract, we’re lost.” That was a big confession from the guy who was never supposed to be lost.
“I get it,” I said, not willing to be left out on the discussion to save my sister. “Our ‘weapons’ have been neutered by the constant music, so we kill the power and free them to do whatever is in their best interest…”
“And it’s in their best interest to overtake that prison,” Nemesis interrupted. “Who knows how many prized specimens they’ve been deprived of behind those fortified walls?”
“Your aunt rendered them powerless and took their investments away to be fixed” added Ghost. “I think they’d love to stop the loss of their kind…our kind...whatever it is we are these days.” It wasn’t normal for Ghost to stumble over his words; KC’s capture had to be getting to him. “So what do we need to do to take out the power?”
“You’re not going to believe how easy this is going to be,” said Buck with a smile.
Finally. We’d been owed a break for some time now.
