Author’s Note
This is a work of biographical fiction. All of the epigraphs, letters, and journal entries in italics—except the two letters in chapter 36—are authentic, as is some of Søren Kierkegaard’s dialogue.
Regine Olsen told her side of the story to several people who recorded it in the second and third person. In the epigraphs, I have taken the liberty of returning her words to the first person.
The portrait of Regine Olsen on the front cover was painted by Emil Baerentzen in 1840. It now hangs in the Copenhagen ByMuseum.
