PIECE OF MIND: PONS

The pons is your dirty mind—the home of arousal—and sits like a tennis ball atop your brain stem. It’s also the conduit for sensory information traveling between the cerebellum and the cerebrum, and is responsible for flipping the switch to REM sleep. Partly because of its role in sleep, many also think the pons is where dreams are made. Certainly, during REM sleep, it spews a neurotransmitter that lights various dream centers, but whether it does this of its own accord or whether the pons is a pawn to higher regions of the brain is still up for debate.
