WILD KINGDOM: HUMMINGBIRDS VS. FIGHTER PILOTS

Let’s admit it’s more than a stereotype: ladies like fighter pilots. Maybe it’s the pilots’ ability to swoop and dive and generally blow other males out of the sky (with overtly Freudian weaponry).

At least that’s what lights a lady hummingbird’s lamp.

After flapping his wings to initiate a courtship dive, the male hummingbird folds into a missile, reaching speeds of 385 body lengths per second. That’s the equivalent of an F-22 Raptor flying at approximately 15,400 mph or about Mach 20 (ten times faster than the super fighter’s top speed). When the fighter jock hummingbird slams on the breaks, he pulls nine G’s, tops in the animal kingdom.

Can you say “Take me to bed or lose me forever”?
