A breaching Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) exhibits the typical scars found mainly on male beaked whales that are caused by other males, either in play or competition. The Cuvier’s beaked whale is sensitive to noise, and a number of mass strandings have been recorded around the world following Navy sonar events. As a result, the Spanish Navy maintains a 50-nautical-mile (92.6 km) quiet zone around the Canary Islands, where many beaked whales are found and where these incidents have occurred in the past.
