In 2012, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s remotely operated vehicle Jason probed the explosion of life along an underwater mountain chain known as the Mid-Cayman Rise, at the Piccard Vent Field in the Caribbean Sea. At more than three miles (5 km) deep and covered in anemones and shrimp, the Piccard vents have proved to be the deepest known hydrothermal vents in the world.
