There is a clutch of small hills forming a barrier between the area north of Nottingham and the village of Calverton, of which this hill is the toughest. Leave Calverton and rise gently, heading south towards the ridge ahead. Passing the national speed limit signs, the slope increases slightly as you make your way towards the first bends. Heading right, the surface changes; the road is now ribbed and does nothing to aid your progress. Next, bending left, things get tougher. The sudden rearing up may take you by surprise, forcing a gulp and an immediate change of gear. Push hard around the left-hand bend and into a gruelling straight to the brow ahead. It’s a real grind to the 90-degree corner where you leave tree cover and bend right for the final stretch of climbing. Click up the gears and ride hard all the way to the next corner and the final left-hander where the summit lies.
