Linking Derbyshire and Yorkshire, the climb out of Hathersage should not be underestimated. To begin, make your way south on the A6187 and turn left on to School Lane. The road levels outside the school and you start the climb proper from here. Heading up and round to the right, you pass The Scotsmans Pack pub and wind through some houses. The gradient increases as you pass the last house and bend to the left. After backing off a pinch, the road then makes its way round to the right and ramps up steeper and steeper towards a left-hand bend. Here the hard climbing ends for a while and up ahead you see the exposed rock face, which on any day will be dotted with brightly clad climbers. Ride up to the base, level out, and then bank right into the finale. A solid slog, punctuated only by a couple of sets of rumble strips – the second set coming just before the peak of the road, where the gradient disappears.
