The most obvious route to take if you’re heading south out of Glossop is the tough but fairly busy Chunal Hill – the A624. If you travel a couple of kilometres west though, you’ll arrive in the village of Charlesworth and from here you can tackle the harder and much quieter Monks’ Road. Leaving Town Lane, you turn south on to Chapel Brow and right away it’s a struggle out of the village. Past the last house a huge stone wall bordering the chapel grounds begins on the right. This offers excellent shelter from any wind that may be coming from the west, so you may be very thankful for it. Leaving the wall behind, the severity of the slope increases up to a fake brow, which marks the end of the steep stuff and ushers in a much kinder challenge. From here on, the road gradually bends to the right and is exposed all the way up to one final kick – one last hurrah before it bends right and drops down.
