Travelling south-east from Minsterley heading towards the mighty Long Mynd (‘Long Mountain’), Callow Lane is an excellent way to enter the north Shropshire Hills. Leaving the A488 you’re soon out of the small town and the slope rises in front of you just past a turn on the left. Stepping up steeply, easing, and then getting steeper again, it delivers you to a sharp right-hand corner that leads to a slight plateau. Compose yourself and look up ahead to the widening of the road before it rises rapidly once more. You next begin a long-drawn-out bend to the left before weaving between the wonderfully gnarled trees, crumbling walls, and rolling grassland. As you rise, make sure to glance over your right shoulder and take in the views – a just reward for your efforts thus far. To finish, the climb bends right, heading south-east to end just round the pronounced brow past the farm buildings on your right.
