WINWOOD HEATH ROAD

GREAT FARLEY WOOD, WORCESTERSHIRE

RATING 6/10

Farley Lane is the obvious way up this ridge, but if you make the effort to find it among the tangle of dirty lanes, then this climb is far more rewarding. Following Shut Mill Lane and the brook that runs parallel with it, you reach Winwood Heath Road and it kicks up straight away. Within the first 100 metres you hit a 20% left-hand bend; force yourself round it and then sit back in the saddle to compose yourself for what lies ahead. Becoming gradually steeper, the narrow, quiet, and debris-covered road begins to bend right. Although it’s never as tough as that first bend, it is still a demanding climb that offers little opportunity to rest. Yes, the gradient eases in a number of places, but it steps back up once again each time until you break free from the woodland to approach the summit. Once you reach the top – the junction with Farley Road – make sure you turn around for the stunning views out over the Malvern Hills.
