WALWYN ROAD

COLWALL STONE, HEREFORDSHIRE

RATING 4/10

The Malvern Hills, famous for their mineral water, are visible for miles and miles, forming a large rocky outcrop that protrudes from the surrounding plains. At first glance one would expect to find a climber’s paradise, but I was a little disappointed. There are many routes to ride up from the east and the west, but none right to the top – that privilege is reserved for walkers. The best I found, although likely a bit busier than Harcourth Road to the north, is Walwyn Road. You begin on the western side in Colwall Stone where the slope picks up as you head north-east, getting steeper as you progress. Riding into Upper Colwall, you reach a zigzag and the toughest section of the climb. Bending tight right and then shortly after tighter left, the corners are fantastic. Now you line up for the summit, which cuts into the rock – as pronounced a brow as you’ll find, and also the border with Worcestershire.
