BEAUTY
“He has made everything beautiful in its time“ (Ecclesiastes 3:11a).
Beautiful brides in English-speaking countries have traditionally worn—
“Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue.”
These four items form a pleasing analogy to the four things that the translators and editors of the NKJV sought to retain and even enhance in wedding the Tyndale—King James tradition to today’s usage. The four chapters of this second section, Beauty, will follow the order of the saying:
5. Something Old—The ancient beauties from the original up through the Vulgate, and how very much is still enshrined in the KJV/NKJV.
6. Something New—The fresh modernizations of language, punctuation, and format that improve the beauty of the Bible for today’s readers.
7. Something Borrowed—The justly celebrated and beautiful texts that have been borrowed from the KJV almost unchanged because of their familiarity and cadence.
8. Something Blue—The change from some expressions that many consider vulgar or “blue” language to currently acceptable expressions that are “true blue.”
