Appendix
“Once again the stage is set for you”: The Lamb tour itinerary

Note: The information in this appendix has been culled from several sources—fan sites and tape trading lists and Genesis bootleg discographies on the web (most notably the Genesis Movement’s “Gig Guide: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” (n.d.) and Paul Russell’s excellent Genesis: A Live Guide 1969 to 1975 (2004), which provides annotated reviews of every extant performance tape uncovered as of 2004. Russell’s reviews, in fact, indicate that a great deal of audience-traded tapes exist beyond those indicated here; I have simply indicated those that have been ‘professionally’ packaged and traded with titles. Where there are discrepancies in details (regarding venue name, for example), I have followed Russell.

Note: In light of progressive rock’s fan base rooted in the university and college circuit, noted by both Stump (1997) and Macan (1997, 2006), it is noteworthy that this performance was one of only two such venues on the Lamb tour, showing just how far from those roots progressive rock had gone since its late-1960s origins.

Note: This show was professionally recorded and portions were filmed by a German television crew. It was, along with the April 15 Empire Pool performance, the most widely bootlegged of the Lamb tour. It has appeared in bootleg form as Twilight Alehouse (Flashback WorldProductions 10.80.0109), As Through Emerald City (Amazing Kornyfone TAKRL 1945, Amazing Kornyfone TAKRL 19413/183), Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles 24 January 1975 (BURP 019/AV07), Shrine 75, Live in Los Angeles (TM Productions GEN750124TM), Revelation Without a Cause (Wizard WRMB 313), and in streaming audio form on the Wolfgang’s Shrine web site. A version with considerable post-production (see Chapter 6) was released on the Genesis Archive 1967–1975 box set. Video clips from the German Treffpunkt broadcast were bootlegged on Treffpunkte (MPEG), Genesis Collection 1973 & 1975 (DVD, GMDVD 08), Genesis Collection 1972–1975 (DVD, GMDVD 11), and The Lamb Lies Down on Treffpunkt.

Note: To conclude the US leg of the tour, Genesis returned to Chicago, where they had debuted The Lamb, for a return performance—this time at the somewhat larger Arie Crown Theater. By now, apparently, word had gotten out that this was a show worth filming; parts of the performance were filmed by an audience member with a silent home-movie camera and since bootlegged as The Lamb Lies Down on Chicago (DVD). The band took a two-week hiatus before resuming performances in Europe.

Note: Sadly, this was to be the only Lamb performance in the country that had provided Genesis with vital support while they were still struggling to find an audience in their homeland just a few years previously. Unfortunately, fans and police clashed at this show, with the use of tear gas and several injuries as a result (Russell, 2004, p. 150). The performance was fortunately bootlegged as The Real Last Time (Stonehenge STCD 2004/2005), Torino Palasport, and Torino75.

15 Apr

Empire Pool, Wembley

London

Note: The second Wembley date is the most widely bootlegged concert on the Lamb tour. Professionally recorded by the BBC, and syndicated for US broadcast by the Westwood One radio network, the show has over the years been broadcast in a number of different time formats (with accordingly different omissions from the set lists). These broadcasts, as well as (evidently) the original soundboard master tapes, are the source for a bewildering variety of bootleg packages. Among the bootlegs of the show are: The Light Goes Down on Empire (Highland HL271), The Audience at Empire Pool, Genesis—Live in London 1975 (Super Golden Radio Shows SGRS 022), Lamb Stew (RS Records CD 21), Last Supper, The Waiting Room (Flashback WorldProductions 10.89.0108), Live in London 1974 [sic] (Live Storm LSCD 51143), Awed Man Out (Amazing Kornyfone Label TAKRL 1975 and ACL 008), A Perfect Vintage (TM Productions and Hamilton A/V 150475-2), Perfect Wembley, Empire Pooled (Coaster Factory), We Are the Lamia of the Pool (PRRP 010), Westwood One (Superstar Concert Series 98-18), The Carpet Crawlers (Chapter One CO25134), Wembley75 Complete Pre-FM (AV 01), British Tour 1975 (Bird Brain Records RSB-002), On Broadway, Another Gold Record, and Stereo Pop Special – Vintage In Concert No. 313 (BBC TS 313 – CN 4248/S).
