Any ingestion or exposure to a noxious substance must be considered a medical emergency until proven otherwise. If the patient is calling into the office about a substance that he or someone in his household has ingested, try to ascertain what the substance is. Poison control should be consulted and the patient transported for treatment as soon as possible.
