My Menopause Experience
By Marilyn Morley
My name is Marilyn Morley. I learned very little about menopause and the symptoms during my nursing training. What I was taught was that HRT was the right treatment for most women experiencing menopause symptoms.
After the birth of my first baby I used the minipill (a progestin-only birth control pill) for contraception for a while. I had to stop, as it never agreed with me. Then, in my thirties, my doctor prescribed Depo-Provera injections, which is synthetic progesterone. It made me very moody and difficult to live with, and I hated taking it.
After my past experiences and watching my mother suffer through her very long and uncomfortable menopause symptoms, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to use HRT myself when the time came. I also had concerns that HRT could cause breast cancer, uterine cancer, blood clots and other health problems.
I decided to be prepared and empower myself, so I started doing my own research.
I attended lectures by Sherrill Sellman, an American Naturopath; Leonie Batson, an Australian Hormonal Health Practitioner and Midwife; and Hayley Wallace, an Australian Naturopath.
I read books such as:
Dr. John R. Lee’s What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause and Natural Progesterone
Sherrill Sellman’s Mothers, Prevent Your Daughters from Getting Breast Cancer and Hormone Heresy
Chris Woollams’s Oestrogen, The Killer in Our Midst
These books were all about hormonal balancing by using natural progesterone and reducing exposure to the toxic chemicals (exenoestrogens) found in soaps and cosmetics, which can cause hormonal imbalance. I also read books about eating a healthy diet with vitamin and mineral supplementation.
I was peri-menopausal at fifty-two years, when my menstrual cycles started to become irregular and further apart, and by the age of fifty-five years I had reached menopause (no more menstrual cycles).
During my menopausal time, I found my skin was getting dry, itchy and flaky. I also started having night sweats, decreased libido, vaginal dryness, anxiety, lack of energy, mood swings, weight gain and difficulty sleeping.
My initial problem was dry, itchy skin, which was making me feel stressed and anxious. I went to a few skin specialists and all they could do for me was give me cortisone cream. They also told me to stop scratching and take up knitting. One doctor gave me an antidepressant (what an insult). Instead of spending time finding out what was causing my problem, it seemed it was easier for him to just prescribe me tablets.
I decided to go and see Leonie Batson for natural hormonal balancing. Leonie explained that hormonal imbalance could be from an imbalance of copper and zinc, too many heavy metals, toxins (exenoestrogens) stored in fat tissue and adrenal fatigue, which causes an increase in cortisol and hormonal imbalance. She performed a hair analysis to detect any underlying nutritional problems, and the results from my hair analysis showed I had some heavy metals in my system.
Based on the results, Leonie recommended nutritional supplements and Endau hormonal balancing cream, made with chaste tree and wild yam. This cream will actually encourage your own body to produce hormones where they are needed. The cream is rubbed onto thin areas of the skin on a daily basis, where it is absorbed directly through the skin and into the blood.
The supplements that helped me were Colloidal minerals, women’s vitamins, Krill Oil and adrenal nutritional support.
Within a couple of months of taking the nutritional supplements and using the Endau cream, I stopped having night sweats, was more energetic, stopped having mood swings and I was sleeping much better.
I am now fifty-seven years old. At times I may feel a bit warm during the day, but I have no other menopausal symptoms. I am no longer overweight, I go to the gym three or four times a week, and I have more energy to enjoy my busy life. My health is better than it was ten years ago.
As a registered nurse, I am interested in sharing my knowledge and empowering other women to help themselves with natural health prevention. I now assist women with hormonal balancing by helping them to make better food choices, choose good quality nutritional supplements, recognize safe personal care products and devote more time to themselves so they can enjoy being who they are and have a balanced life.
