SAFETY CHECK!

Weigh your water in a heat-proof, non-reactive bowl and weigh your lye in a separate container. Take these outside to a well-ventilated, safe area and add your lye to your water, mixing thoroughly with a nonreactive spoon. Set in a safe spot to cool.

Meanwhile, weigh your oils and cocoa butter and place over medium heat until thoroughly melted. Remove from heat, and add essential oils for scent if you so choose.

Check that your lye and oil temperatures are around 100°F to 110°F and blend your lye/water into your oils. Mix these thoroughly with a stick blender until you have reached trace. At this point, you have two options: 1) split all your soap into one container per color you choose and blend in your colors with the stick blender until you have reached hues you are happy with, or 2) do as I did in the photos and measure your colorant into ziptop bags, add the liquid soap, and mix by shaking and moving the soap around with your hands. If you use this method, don’t forget to seal the bags before mixing.

I used chlorella for green, cocoa for brown, charcoal for gray, white I left alone, aklanet for a drab purple, red sandalwood for a light gray/brown/purple, and turmeric for orange. Blend until a mild trace is reached, before medium trace but not too thin, and put into separate containers that can be sealed or leave in your sealable plastic bags. Seal these containers and let sit for 24 hours. The next day, the soap should be malleable. If it’s not, let it sit another day or open the container to air dry for a few hours. When you’re ready to use it, just start sculpting away on a piece of parchment paper. Let cure for 4 to 6 weeks and your soap creations will be ready to use, and bring joy to your bathing experience!
