Teresa Hannegan Sabankaya is the founder and creative director of Bonny Doon Garden Company in Santa Cruz, California, a business she began in 1999 by growing her own assortment of boutique cut flowers. Teresa is one of the most innovative floral designers in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Area and has exhibited her floral art at numerous museums and flower shows including the Bouquets to Art exhibition at the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, the Monterey Museum of Art, and Filoli Mansion and Gardens (a National Trust Historic Site).

Her love of, or rather obsession with, the language of flowers spawned her creation of the modern-day posy. The posy is her favorite design in florals; a modern spin on a historic nosegay, these “little garden bouquets that tell a story” have a permanent place in her heart. This book was inspired by her desire to share such a beautiful and simple way to tell your story with flowers.

Teresa is an instructor of floral design and can be frequently seen leading workshops and presentations about flowers in many levels. Her Posy in Your Pocket presentations have been highly attended at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, the Monterey Home and Garden Expo, Filoli Estate, and many garden clubs and nurseries. Teresa is a pioneer of the Slow Flowers movement by her longstanding commitment to using her own organically grown, and other locally sourced flowers in her floral designs at her retail store and her wedding and event floral work.

Teresa is an Advanced Certified Green Gardener and a member of Slow Flowers, Great Garden Speakers, Slow Weddings Network, and the California State Floral Association. She and her work have been featured in Flower Confidential by Amy Stewart, the PBS documentary Botany of Desire (based on the book by Michael Pollan), New York Times, Elle, CBS Sunday Morning, Romantic Homes Magazine, Country Gardens Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and elsewhere.
