Plath and Hughes rented an apartment at 3 Chalcot Square in London near Primrose Hill in 1960–1961. Frieda Rebecca Hughes was born at home in London on 1 April 1960. Heinemann published The Colossus and Other Poems in London on 31 October 1960. Plath suffered a miscarriage in February 1961 and had an appendectomy in March. A detailed description of her 1961 hospital visit is contained in ‘The Inmate’ section of Appendix 10. In August 1961, Plath and Hughes moved to Court Green, their newly purchased house in North Tawton, Devonshire. Nicholas Farrar Hughes was born at home in North Tawton on 17 January 1962. Appendix 15 contains Plath’s observations of her Devonshire neighbors and a detailed description of Nicholas Hughes’s birth.
