Advocating enactment of legislation

From Executive Office to elected representative

Dear Congressman Wormsley,

I am writing to ask your support for H.R. 731, the National Small Business Regulatory Assistance Act.

As you know, our company employs more than 200 people in your district and we have plans for future expansion. However, we join with the National Association of Plumbing Fixture in asking Members of Congress to move quickly to enact this important bill that will reduce the regulatory load on small businesses.

We have made tremendous advances in our manufacturing efficiencies, and we believe we have the most dedicated and best-trained workforce. But we are constantly battling against foreign companies that do not bear the same expensive burden of regulation and taxation that we do.

I am sure that you will want to cast your vote to support jobs here in your home district.

Please feel free to contact me anytime to discuss this bill or any other matter related to our operations.

Opposing enactment of legislation

From Executive Office to elected representative Dear Senator Siracusa,

On behalf of Consolidated Intergalactic, I am writing to express our hope that you will help defeat the proposed ad valorem tax increase on imported dyestuffs that is included in Senate Bill 103, which is scheduled for a committee hearing next week.

As you know, we have 250 employees here in Lumbertown and they are our principal asset. Although our company is nearly ninety years old, it has been many decades since we were able to use local raw materials in our manufacture.

The long-term implication of increased taxes for our company and many others like us is increased pressure to move our business out of state or even out of the country.

It is my intention to attend the hearing at the statehouse. I would be happy to testify or make my staff available to you in preparing information for the committee.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Asking for assistance in obtaining government grants

From Executive Office to elected representative

Dear Congressman Wormsley,

As always, we appreciate your legislative accomplishments on behalf of manufacturers. Much of the recent successes of Consolidated Intergalactic have been made possible by your good work.

I am writing to ask your assistance in locating federal research and development grants to support our efforts to protect the environment and save natural resources. Our manufacturing and research departments are working on a plan that would allow recycling of many of the rare oils and coatings that are applied to our nonmetallic geegaws. It would be our intent to work with our customers and the federal government to come up with an economically feasible program that would allow recapturing these materials.

I would appreciate it if you could direct us to an appropriate agency or department of the federal government where we might obtain research grants and technical assistance.

Asking for assistance in obtaining minority employment grants

From Executive Office to elected representative

Dear Congressman Wormsley,

We appreciate your support of H.R. 129, the Inner-City Job Training Corps, and are pleased to see that it has passed and been signed into law.

Here at Consolidated Intergalactic, we would be happy to be one of the first participants in the new program. Each year we have several dozen entry-level jobs that would be appropriate for inner-city youths, but we have not had great success in hiring because of gaps in education, job skills, and language barriers.

The Inner-City Job Training Corps seeks to address these problems by allowing employers and nonprofit community organizations to work together—with the assistance of federal funding—on the design of individualized job training courses that are directly aimed at available jobs.

We would appreciate any assistance you or your staff can provide in helping us get a training corps underway here in Lumbertown.

Requesting assistance in dealings with government agency

From Executive Office to elected representative

Dear Representative Espon,

I am writing to ask your assistance in resolving a problem we have encountered with the State Department of Transportation.

I have enclosed copies of recent correspondence we have received from the department in which they have denied our request for relief from an administrative ruling that upheld a decision to place a traffic barrier on State Route 52 in front of our factory.

The purpose of the barrier, according to the agency, is to prevent traffic jams caused by cars and trucks waiting to make left turns from the northbound lane of the road. Instead, the State DOT plans to require vehicles to travel an additional mile farther north to an intersection where traffic will be routed onto a tight cloverleaf to reverse directions and head south.

Under this plan, nearly all of our heavy commercial trucks and most of the vehicles of our employees will be traveling through a residential district. And over time, the extra mileage will amount to a significant waste of fuel at a time when we are all seeking ways to reduce energy consumption and pollution.

Our company has offered to donate to the state a strip of land we already own on the northbound side of the road to allow the creation of a turning lane and a through-lane on the road. We have also offered to pay the cost for a traffic officer during morning and evening rush hour.

I hope you will support us by contacting the State DOT and convincing them to accept our offer. Please feel free to call me anytime to discuss this matter.

Requesting change to traffic engineering

From Executive Office to city transportation department

We would like your assistance in improving the flow of traffic at the parking lot for our headquarters in Lumbertown.

At present, there is a standard two-way traffic light on SR50 in front of our lot. During the morning rush hour there is often a considerable backup of cars heading north and waiting for their chance to make a left turn into the lot; at the end of the day, there is a similar traffic jam of vehicles seeking to exit our lot and make a left turn to go south.

We have at times obtained assistance from the Lumbertown Police Department, employing an offduty patrolman to direct traffic. It would seem that a better solution would be to install a computerized controller and a set of left turn arrows on the south and west faces of the traffic signal.

We would be happy to assist your department in planning for such a change, and would be willing to contribute company funds toward the cost of purchase and installation of new equipment.

Requesting legislative input on traffic engineering

From Executive Office to mayor or city council

We would like your assistance in improving the flow of traffic at the parking lot for our headquarters in Lumbertown. We have previously made a direct request to the Lumbertown City Transportation Department, but we did not receive a satisfactory response.

At present, there is a standard two-way traffic light on SR50 in front of our lot. During the morning rush hour, there is often a considerable backup of cars heading north and waiting for their chance to make a left turn into the lot; at the end of the day, there is a similar traffic jam of vehicles seeking to exit our lot and make a left turn to go south.

We would suggest that it would help traffic throughout downtown Lumbertown to install a computerized controller and a set of left turn arrows on the south and west faces of the traffic signal.

We would be happy to assist the city in planning for such a change, and would be willing to contribute company funds toward the cost of purchase and installation of new equipment.

Complaining about policies of governmental agency

From Executive Office to elected representative

The Honorable Patricia Kramden
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Ms. Kramden,

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the 2,487 employees of Consolidated Intergalactic, I am writing to seek your help in resolving a significant problem that is threatening our ability to do business here in the Sixth Congressional District.

The Investigations Unit of U.S. Customs and Border Protection has blocked import of Organic Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Brazil Nut Oil because of an isolated instance of drug smuggling by one supplier of this commodity.

As you may know, high-quality Brazil Nut Oil is an essential manufacturing component for many of the geegaw and doodad products of Consolidated Intergalactic.

We anticipate having to shut down two assembly lines, employing 248 of your constituents, if we do not receive fresh supplies of this oil within the next thirty days.

Our competitors in China and Guatemala face no difficulties in obtaining sufficient supplies of Brazil Nut Oil, and Customs and Border Protection does not block the importation of finished products that use the oil in their manufacture.

We ask for your immediate help in resolving this problem and saving jobs and protecting families here in Lumbertown.

We stand ready to assist you in any way. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Congratulating official on re-election

From Executive Office to elected representative Dear Congressman Keefe,

I was very pleased to see that the voters of our district have once again shown their good judgment and returned you to office.

We have appreciated your assistance in Washington and look forward to working with you in coming years.

Again, congratulations.

Congratulating newly elected official

From Executive Office to elected representative

Dear Senator-elect Beecher,

Congratulations on your election to the Senate.

As you know, we are one of the largest employers in Lumbertown and we hope to grow and prosper here. Please feel free to call me anytime to discuss our legislative concerns and other matters.

We look forward to working with you in coming years.

Invitation to elected official to attend press event

From Executive Office to elected official or honored guest

Councilman David Miller
Lumbertown Town Council Dear

Councilman,

We would like to invite you to join executives of Consolidated Intergalactic in hosting an appearance by Congressman Argent Larron on September 15 at 2 P.M.

Congressman Larron will be meeting with the press to discuss his legislative efforts to eliminate tariffs on processed imported organic oils and new laws offering tax incentives to manufacturers in this vital industry. As chairman of the Lumbertown Town Council’s Committee on Industrial Development, we would be honored if you would introduce the congressman at the press conference.

Response to request for comments on document prior to submission

COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL

Enclosed please find my comments on the proposed Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed expansion of the wastewater treatment facility at the Atherson location.

In general, I found the document to be without problems. I have noted several sections that need minor clarification.

However, I have marked one section that I feel should be substantially revised or removed. On page 8, in paragraphs 3 and 4, we make mention of the possibility of future expansions of the water treatment plant in decades to come.

Although this may be necessary in coming years, I feel that including it in this submission will likely result in a possibly unnecessary expansion of the agency’s review of the document, which would delay the process.
