It is with great sadness that we report that Eugene Orsillo, a fifteen-year veteran of the Security Office of Consolidated Intergalactic in Lumbertown, died this morning as the result of injuries suffered in a fire at the main warehouse.
“A member of our family has fallen and we are heartbroken,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Keyes. “Mr. Orsillo was injured doing his duty: evacuating others from the building in an emergency.”
Two other members of the Consolidated Intergalactic Security Office received minor injuries in the initial response to the fire. All other members of staff in the building were able to evacuate safely.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation but appears to have been caused by an electrical problem in air handling equipment. The fire, which broke out at approximately 1:10 A.M. this morning, heavily damaged the warehouse and its contents.
Firefighters from Lumbertown and mutual aid companies from Eumonia, Central Square, and East Westfield fought the fire for more than three hours before bringing it under control. Damage was contained in the warehouse building and did not spread to the manufacturing or administrative sections of the headquarters.
Eugene Orsillo, fifty-seven, joined Consolidated Intergalactic in 1993. He is survived by his wife Amelia and his son Arthur.
The company will announce plans for a memorial service later this week.
Consolidated Intergalactic’s headquarters is closed today. The Manufacturing and Technical Departments will reopen at 4 P.M. today and Executive Offices will reopen at ordinary hours on Tuesday.
Consolidated Intergalactic is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of nonmetallic widgets, gadgets, and geegaws. The privately held company, headquartered in Lumbertown, employs more than 12,000 at factories and warehouses across the United States and in Canada, Japan, Luxembourg, and New Guinea.

At a memorial for fallen hero Eugene Orsillo, who died in a fire at Consolidated Intergalactic’s warehouse on May 21, the company announced the establishment of the Orsillo Scholarship.
The award will pay full expenses for four years of college, and will be given every year to a child of a current or former employee of Consolidated Intergalactic. The first recipient of the award will be Arthur Orsillo, a graduating senior at Lumbertown High School and son of Eugene Orsillo.
“We could not think of a better way to honor the sacrifice of Eugene Orsillo than to help a child fulfill his or her dream of higher education,” said Daniel Keyes, president and chief executive officer of Consolidated Intergalactic. “And though we wish this sad event had never happened, we are proud to be able to help Mr. Orsillo’s own family with the first scholarship.”
The Orsillo scholarship will be awarded each year on the anniversary of the fire, with the recipient selected by a committee that will include a company representative, a member of the Orsillo family, and an administrator from the Lumbertown School District. Each year’s winner will be judged on the basis of his or her contributions to the community and their academic record.
In brief remarks at the ceremony, Amelia Orsillo thanked the company for its support. “My husband was very proud of his career at Consolidated Intergalactic, and I am sure he would be happy to know that CI has chosen to take care of his family in this way,” she said.

E-mail Statement to Employees
We return to work this morning with heavy hearts. We are thankful for the assistance of firefighters and emergency response workers who fought the fire in our warehouse yesterday, and we are grateful that more than 100 staffers were able to safely evacuate from our Lumbertown building early Monday.
But nothing can replace the loss of Eugene Orsillo, a dedicated employee who rushed toward the fire while everyone else was leaving the building. His efforts, as well as those of Fred Thomas and Brad Maas, were a demonstration of the highest level of bravery and dedication.
Fred and Brad are both recovering from minor burns and scrapes.
We have rented temporary warehouse space at the former Ace Moving Company building in downtown Lumbertown; we will also be relocating much of our shipping operations to that building. We expect that it will be at least six months before we can reopen the warehouse at headquarters.
I will be sending out a statement to all employees tomorrow with the details of a memorial service for Eugene Orsillo and other plans to honor his memory.
