Epilogue

There is no record of Levi and Hilary Farrington ever having been in the Montana goldfields or the Powder River country.

But in 1870 – two years after the incident at Powder River – they did stop the Mobile and Ohio Railroad at Union City, Tennessee, and rob the Southern Express Company of $20,000 in cash.

William Barton and William Taylor were members of their gang.

Hilary Farrington was captured by William Pinkerton after a long siege at a farmhouse in Verona, Missouri. The outlaw tried to escape while being transported by steamboat to Union City, Tennessee, and was crushed to death in the stern paddle.

Levi Farrington was located in Farmingdale, Illinois, and was eventually knocked out in the square and captured by a Pinkerton operative named Brown.

He never stood trial. Delivered safely to Union City, Levi Farrington was taken by night riders and hanged from an elm tree overlooking the main gate of the county cemetery.
