Avagadro

On earth, Amedeo Avagadro (1776-1856) was an Italian scientist who contributed to the science of chemistry. In his honor, Avagadro’s Number, the number of molecules in what is called a mole is named after him.

Knowledge of the value of this number, 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power, is essential when taking exams in college freshman chemistry. Sometimes the very first question on a test would be, "What is Avagadro’s Number?

When I was a freshman, three chemistry teaching assistants rented an apartment together and when it came time to list all of their names for their telephone, they included Amedeo Avagadro as one of their apartment mates.

This meant that if the question did appear on an exam, you got full credit for either 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power or KLondike 5-0123.

By an amazing coincidence, Avagadro is also the name of a famous alchemist in Master of the Five Magics.
