Chapter 43

“It’s done.” Gail closed the laptop, reached for two wineglasses in the kitchen’s top cabinet, and filled both.

Janet smiled while shaking her head. “You’ve got guts. I’ll give you that. Don’t you think you’re inviting trouble?”

“Maybe, but no guts, no glory. We are that good, Mom.”

Janet returned her comment with a wagging finger. “I wouldn’t get overconfident. It’ll be our downfall if you do.”

Gail waved her off. “Nah, it’s all for fun. I know he’s nothing like Dad, but I’m daring myself to do it just to see if he’s the same as the rest—stupider than shit.”

They both laughed.

“Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to jeopardize our mission, but it’ll be fun to mix it up a bit and then kill him like the others. What a shock wave that’ll create in the Chicago Police Department, and it’ll serve them right for snooping so much. Just leave us the hell alone and let us do what we’re meant to do.”

“That’s right.” Janet took a seat at the table, licked her index finger, and lightly ran it around the rim of the wineglass. It rang out a deep tone. “I’m impressed. Real crystal.”
