Chapter 59

Gail had already made the early-morning run to the hardware store to pick up the antifreeze, a needle-nose pliers, a box cutter, a weeding knife, and a small pruning clipper. Along with those supplies, she brought home a box of doughnuts.

Janet elbowed Gail as they sat on the couch drinking coffee and enjoying the doughnut selection. “Look, he’s starting to move.”

“Good. We want to make sure he’s fully awake so he can appreciate what real pain feels like.” Gail squeezed her mother’s arm. “One cop or one hundred, we don’t need them messing with our mission. Right, Mom?”

“That’s right, honey, and we have all the time in the world to enjoy Detective McCord’s company, so go ahead and have another doughnut.”
