Texas has an excellent system of state parks offering camping, angling, hiking, boating, and tours of historical sites. Facilities range from those with hiking trails, golf courses, and cabins to others that are largely undeveloped and exist as an example of how the region once looked.
Reservations are recommended for overnight facilities. Pets are permitted if they are confined or on a leash shorter than 6 feet. The central reservation number for all Texas state parks is (512) 389-8900, Mon through Fri 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., or see tpwd.state.tx.us/business/park_reservations for online, mail, and fax reservations. For TDD service call (512) 389-8915 weekdays. To cancel a reservation call (512) 389-8900.
For travelers 65 years or older (or those with at least a 60 percent VA disability), there is the free or discounted (depending on age) State Parklands Passport. This windshield sticker permits free entry into any park. For information on park passes and discounts, see Appendix A.
For more information on Texas state parks, call the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at (800) 792-1112 Mon through Fri during working hours, or at (512) 389-4800 in the Austin area. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department also maintains an excellent website: tpwd.state.tx.us.
