PROJECT 10
CAMPFIRE ROLO MARSHMALLOWS
This project is also one to be done over a campfire.
Instead of roasting plain marshmallows over a campfire, poke a hole in the center of the marshmallow and insert a mini Rolo.
(If desired, you could substitute plain chocolate or other mini candy bar).
The caramel and chocolate will melt inside the marshmallow and fundamentally transform the treat.
The end result is similar to a s’more with caramel.
The Ingredients
Ingredients:
• 1 bag of large marshmallows
• 1 bag of mini Rolo candy (or other candy bar—I like mini Snickers.)
Tools:
• Stick
• Fire
Procedure:
1. Poke a hole into the center of a marshmallow.
Stuff Rolo candy into marshmallow
2. Cram a small Rolo candy into the hole.
3. Push the marshmallow/Rolo onto the stick and roast over a fire.
Char as desired
Yield:
Happy children
Lessons Learned:
Cooking over a campfire reinforces that fire is a tool, and that with knowledge and skill dangerous things can be safely controlled and made useful.
Using alternate candies also rewards imagination.
I know this is a not quite a full project, but it does support the real goal of the book, which is spending quality time with children while teaching them how to think.
I don’t know of any better way to teach children creativity other than letting them see firsthand the benefit of trying new things. If your kids are in scouts or other youth orientated outdoor groups, I imagine they will show their friends this project at their very next outing. This will reinforce the benefit of knowing (and sharing) new things.
