This book is both love letter and lament to my favorite sport. I wrote it to revive the memory of the greatest generation of boxers the world has ever seen and to set the record straight. Whether it is read as a historical document, training guide, or just out of curiosity, I hope the reader has gained a broader appreciation for the art of boxing and for those who were its most accomplished artisans. I also want to make clear that although at times I have been harsh in my criticism it was never my intention, or the intention of anyone interviewed for this book, to disrespect any of today’s champions or contenders. I have tried to present my views fairly and honestly. Every fighter is deserving of respect who takes that long walk from the dressing room and up those four steps into the ring.
