PRO TIPS
1. Adhering the Tissue Paper
Substitutes for AquaSeal would include wallpaper paste, Elmer’s Glue diluted 50 percent with water, or the base paint color of your finish. If you use the base paint color as your adhesive, you can also roll that base color right on top of the tissue paper at the same time you install it. However, this means the tissue is permanently adhered to the wall.
2. Buy It by the Ream
If you’re doing a large job like walls or a ceiling, it’s much cheaper to buy a ream of tissue paper from a paper manufacturer than to buy small packets of it at a gift wrap store.
3. Tissuing Next to Trim Molding
When applying tissue to a wall, place the straight edge of the tissue right next to, but not onto, the trim molding. Keep it away from the molding about 1/16 inch (1.6mm). If the tissue overlaps onto the taped-out molding or ceiling line, you will have to cut it with a razor blade to remove the tape safely and not tear the tissue paper into your wall treatment.
STEP 1: First, crumple and un-crumple one or two pieces of 24 x 36-inch (61 x 91cm) tissue paper and set it aside. Roll AquaSeal on your wall in the area where you want to apply the tissue paper. While it’s wet, press on the tissue paper, gathering it together with your hands to form creases and crumples in the tissue paper. Tack the corners down lightly with your fingertips.
STEP 2: Use your fingers to crumple and press the tissue together, not outward, to get more creases and therefore more texture.
STEP 3: Once the tissue paper is up, roll on AquaSeal to press the tissue into place but don’t smooth it out—leave the creases as they are. Repeat as often as needed to cover the entire space. Let dry.
STEP 4: Basecoat the tissued surface with Maple Sugar or other light tan eggshell latex paint. Let dry.
STEP 5: With a dry rag, apply the Mandarin Red LusterStone using circular motions. In your transition areas, start outside and work up into the areas already painted, reducing the pressure and amount of paint as you “walk” into the transition area. Keep working the paint for a consistent coverage. Let dry.
STEP 6: Dilute Antique Cherry Stain & Seal with 15-20 percent FX Thinner and apply to your surface with a Whizz roller. Don’t let the stain dry before going on to Step 7.
STEP 7: With a 9-inch (23cm) squeegee, remove some stain and create a horizontal pattern by pulling downward using short choppy motions.
FINISH: Work the squeegee in long horizontal rows, making some of them thinner rows and others wider. Leave more stain in some areas, less in others. The more random the rows, the more natural and interesting this finish will look.
