Yields 1 drink
A balm for those snowy, windy, cold New York nights. Jose lovingly prepares a version of this toddy for sniffling friends, so if you’re feeling under the weather, replace the bourbon with a dash of cayenne pepper, one whole unpeeled clove of garlic, and a touch of extra honey for his secret cure for the common cold.
1 navel orange
2 ounces good-quality bourbon
1 tablespoon honey
½ ounce fresh lemon juice
2 whole star anise
1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger
Hold the navel orange firmly and use a vegetable peeler to peel off a large strip of zest.
Place the bourbon, honey, lemon juice, star anise, ginger, and orange peel in a heatproof glass.
Fill with boiling water and stir well to combine.
