The defining meeting between Lawrence and Groves occurred on Lawrence’s turf, at Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California, after he had given Groves the grand tour of his facilities in the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley. Groves had seen fit to give Lawrence and his staff a standard, Army-issue pep-talk, admonishing them to work harder and telling Lawrence, “Professor Lawrence, you’d better do a good job. Your reputation depends on it!” After the mini-lecture, over lunch at Vic’s, Lawrence looked Groves straight in the eyes and said, “General Groves, you know, with respect to what you said to me—my reputation is already made. It’s your reputation that depends on this project.” Groves had met his match on an even playing field, and the collaboration led to a successful, if strenuous, uranium isotope separation on an appropriate scale.
