After he published his atomic model, Nagaoka actually visited Ernest Rutherford at Manchester, and there is some question as to whether his work from 1903 was used by Rutherford without reference. Near as we can tell, for some odd reason the subject of atomic structure did not come up during their visit, which had to have occurred sometime before February 22, 1911, when Nagaoka wrote a thank-you note from Tokyo. Rutherford probably first heard of the earlier atomic model on March 11, 1911, in a postcard from a friend, four days after he announced his new theory.
