You want to go away to a tropical island without leaving home? Why not plant up several tropical-themed outdoor pots and enjoy a staycation? Add some tiki torches and string some twinkly lights and voila! You have a tropical backyard paradise. And it all starts with the planters.
Tropical-themed planters have a central plant that is suited to hot and humid climates. These are normally large-leaved plants that seem to outgrow the pot, which is what can happen. If you want to go with a tropical theme, always choose a large heavy pot that will support a tall plant and its extensive roots. Place a large stone or two in the bottom for added weight. This will prevent the container from tipping over in a wind gust.
One plant that fits the tropical theme well is the colorful and flamboyant canna lily (Canna × generalis). Its bold, banana-leaved foliage makes a strong impact and its flowers come in an array of vibrant colors. Canna lilies are subtropical and tropical plants (USDA hardiness zones 8–11) that require full sun and rich, moist soil. You can buy young canna plants and pot them in a large container. Or you can buy canna rhizomes (these are similar to bulbs) and plant directly in a planter. Bury the rhizome, horizontally, 2 inches deep in the soil, with the eye facing up. Space the rhizomes 12 to 18 inches apart. Water thoroughly and often. Cannas love water. They are also heavy feeders and will bloom more profusely with applications of fertilizer in early spring and midsummer. Make sure the planter is large to accommodate the roots.
Another choice for a sculptural tropical plant in a large pot is the dramatic elephant ears (Colocasia) with its giant heart-shaped leaves. There are many cultivars to choose from—some with purplish-black leaves or purple and green foliage. In full sun the plant may be more compact, and in lower light the leaf stems will grow longer, making the plant look more airy.
