Bibliography

I have tried as much as possible to supply the original dates of publication in the case of each bibliographical entry, although occasionally I have had to make decisions concerning dates when choosing, for example, between first and subsequent dates of publication (e.g. supplying the date of the original publication of Schiller’s Ästhetische Briefe though the translation is based on a later edition) or between original and revised texts (e.g. some texts by Rancière have different contents in translation). I hope that these choices allow the reader to consider relations of historical proximity and distance in the material discussed. I must add that, in dating Rancière’s texts, Cody Hennesy’s ‘The published works of Jacques Rancière,’ in Symposium, 15, 2 (2011), 120–49 has been indispensible. I have used, as much as possible, extant translations of texts published in languages other than English, though I have at times I have modified translations and signaled these passages with ‘tm.’ Any errors remain my own.
